Early Settlers and Pioneers

I believe Lawrence county was organized in 1816, though the townships were not named until later. Burlington was the first County Seat. David McLAUGHLIN (whose wife was my father’s sister, and who is now living in Proctorville, in her 91st year) helped to build the old court house in Burlington in 1817.

Deed: Martha Ballard to John W. Mayhew 27 Feb 1867

Know all men by these presents that S. Martha Ballard, of Lawrence County, Ohio in consideration of the sum of Two hundred dollars to me paid by John W. Mayhew, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, do hereby grant bargain sell and convey to the said John W. Mayhew his heirs and assigns forever.

Know all men by these presents that John Ballard and Amanda Ballard wife of the said John Ballard of the county of Lawrence, State of Ohio, in consideration of the sum of four hundred and fifty dollars, to us paid by J.W. Earles of the county of Lawrence, State of Ohio, have bargained and sold and do hereby grant and convey unto the said J.W. Earles

Deed: Samuel Thomas to Elisha Ballard 4 Dec. 1863

Know all men by these presents that Samuel Thomas by Alexander Edgell his attorney in fact in consideration of the one hundred five dollars to him paid by Elisha Ballard all of the County of Lawrence and State of Ohio the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, do hereby grant bargain, sell and convey to the said Elisha Ballard his heirs and assigns forever.
