Know all men by these presents that we, William Ballard and Elizabeth, wife of the said William Ballard of the County of Lawrence State of Ohio, in consideration of the sum of seven hundred dollars in hand paid by James D. Syar, have bargained and sold and do hereby grant and convey unto the said James D. Syar his heirs and assigns forever the following premises situate in the County of Lawrence and in the State of Ohio and bounded and described as follows:   

The southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Section thirty (30) of Township three (3) Range seventeen (17) containing forty-four acres more or less.  To have and to hold said premises with the appurtenances unto the said James D Syar, his heirs and assigns forever and the said William Ballard for himself and heirs do hereby covenant with the said James D. Syar, his heirs and assigns that he is lawfully seized of the premises aforesaid and that they are free and clear from all encumbrances whatsoever; and that he will warrant and defend the same with the appurtenances unto the aid James D. Syar his heirs and assigns against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever.


 In testimony whereof the said, William Ballard and Elizabeth Ballard have hereunto set their hands and seals this 31 day of March in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six. Signed, sealed, and acknowledged

The State of Ohio Lawrence County :S S

               Before me
R. C. Brammer, a Justice of the Peace in and for said

County personally accepted the above-named William Ballard and  Elizabeth, his wife, and acknowledged the signing and sealing of the above conveyance to be their voluntary act and deed, and the said Elizabeth being at the same time examined by me separate and apart from her said the husband; and do contents made known to her by me, she then declared that she did voluntarily sign, seal and acknowledge the same and that she is still satisfied therewith this 31st day of March 1866
