From Doreen Brubaker

JOHN E. BRUBAKER (Hans John) was born on 09 Sep 1719 in Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Virginia. He died on 09 Apr 1804 in Elizabeth Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He died on 09 Apr 1804 in Elizabeth Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married (1) MARIA NEWCOMER in 1749 in Europe. She was born in Europe. She died on 15 Dec 1750 in America. He married (2) MARIA DOHNER, daughter of Michael Tanner, in Apr 1751. She was born in 1728. She died in 1802.

Notes for John E. Brubaker:

After becoming manhood, John Brubaker, the eldest son, desired to go to Switzerland to seek a wife, but his parents were dissuaded from consenting. However, he went after his father’s death. Family tradition says that John Brubaker returned to Germany for a wife. He arrived in his father’s native land and was received with great joy. His friends had two lamps burning evenings.

He was successful in his matrimonial undertaking and found a maiden, Maria Newcomer, willing to cast her lot with him in the New World. John and Maria entered the sacred relation of matrimony in 1749, eight days before Whitsuntide. They then sailed for America on the ship St. Andrew at a port in Philadelphia on September 9, 1749, bringing his cousin Abraham Brubaker, son of Abraham and Maria Herr.

After arriving in America, they settled on the half tract (200 acres) of land his father had bought (the original purchase by his father was 400 acres of land in the Brubaker Valley, north of Lititz). John and Maria Newcomer were not permitted long to live together, only 30 weeks.

The wife died on December 15, 1750. He buried her in the garden, where her remains rested for 150 years, and in 1880 they were removed to the Brubaker Family Graveyard (located along the Brubaker Valley Road about one-half mile east of Route 501) and a suitable tombstone placed at the grave.

The bereaved husband did not long remain a widower in the wilderness. He married April 30, 1751, Maria Tanner (now written Dohner), the eldest daughter of Michael Tanner. John and Maria Tanner have been blessed with a large family of ten children. John Brubaker was deprived of his sight during the latter years of his life.

During his blindness, he would call his grandson (Jacob Brubaker) into his room. Jacob, every Sunday morning, would read a sermon out of his book of sermons, called the “Denner Buch” {Taken from Biographical Annals of Lancaster County, 1903, Vol 1 page 353} (take from Brubaker’s and their Lands by Landis H. Brubaker)

John E. Brubaker and Maria Dohner had the following children:
i. CHRISTIAN BRUBAKER.
ii. JOHN BRUBAKER was born in 1752. He died in 1783.
iii. ANNA BRUBAKER was born in 1753. She died in 1830. 11.
iv. MARIA BRUBAKER was born in 1756. She died in 1827. She married JOHN BARE. 12.
v. JACOB N. BRUBAKER was born in 1758. He died in 1793. He married Susanna Erb in 1781. She died in 1844.
vi. ABRAHAM BRUBAKER was born in 1760. He died in 1762.
vii. MAGDALENA BRUBAKER was born in 1761. She died in 1832.
viii. ELIZABETH BRUBAKER was born in 1764. She died in 1803.
ix. VERONICA BRUBAKER was born in 1766. She died in 1824.
x. BARBARA BRUBAKER was born in 1768. She died in 1846.

2. JACOB BRUBAKER (Hans John1) was born in 1721 in Hempfield Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He died on 29 Jan 1779 in Hempfield Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married (1) SUSANNA STEINMAN STONEMAN, daughter of Christian Stoneman and Elizabeth, on 30 May 1749. He married (2) MARY BARE. She was born in 1733. He married (3) MARIA MARY MARTIN, daughter of Peter Martin, on 24 May 1768.

Notes for Jacob Brubaker:

Deed Abstracts Indexed Lancaster County Pennsylvania Deed Books A -K 1729-1966 reads: D-212 – 1-13-1755; 150 A. Little Conestoga ck.; John Stoner (miller) mortgage to John Newcomer, Jacob Brubaker & Christian Hershey (satisfied 1761) (to Stoner for John & Elizabeth Newcomer; Jacob & w. Susannah Brubaker; Christian & w. Maria Hershey)

Jacob received 87 1/4 acres of the original 500 acres purchased by his father (deed Q-2-513 Lancaster), 74 1/4 acres from Benjamin Hershey (deed Q-2-517), and 62 3/4 acres from his father. The total land received was 224 1/2 acres. Thus, it is unsure where Jacob and Susanna lived, but they probably erected buildings and lived near Hans’ widow and young children.

To be able to give advice and assistance whenever needed. Jacob Brubaker died intestate in 1779. Leaving behind two living children, Christian (B. 1757 D. 1823, married Elizabeth Hershey and Veronica) and Mary (B. 1770 D. 1894 married Abraham Brubaker {C-9}, son of John Jacob Brubaker.

However, settlement of the estate did not occur until 1793, after his daughter, Mary, had become of age and was married. A release of 1783 shows that because Jacob had no will, Christian would receive two shares and Mary one share according to the law at the time of estate settlement. In this release dated July 3, 1793, Deed Q-2-532, Lancaster, Christian paid Mary 1800 pounds as her share of the estate. On the same date, Christian sold to Abraham Brubaker and his sister, Mary, 230 acres for 2,2600 pounds Deed Q-2-544, Lancaster.

This is where it got Strange. Abraham and Mary sold Isaac Kauffman, a brother-in-law, 115 acres on October 22, 1793. The next day, Isaac Kauffman sold the 115 acres back to Abraham. (The only conclusion I find is that the 115 acres were in Abraham’s name only rather than Abraham and Mary’s to do with it as he saw fit.) Since Abraham and Mary had no sons, only daughters, these 230 acres of land passed out of the Brubaker family equally with the marriage of the two daughters. (Taken from Brubaker and their Lands by Landis H. Brubaker)

The following are portions taken from Martyrs’ Mirror published at Ephrata, Pennsylvania, in 1748. The first entry reads: “In the year of Christ 1749 on May 30 have I, Jacob Brubaker, united in marriage with Christian Steinman’s daughter Susanna.” This was the year after his father’s death, and Jacob was about twenty-eight years of age.

In total, Jacob and Susanna had five children:

1. Daughter born August 30, 1752 – died August 2, 1753

2. Twins, born September 12, 1753, Girl, unnamed, died September 18, 1753, Age 6 days. Son John was born September 12, 1753, and died August 4, 1758, at age four years, ten months, and twenty-two days.

3. Elizabeth was born on Sept 17. 1755 died January 1, 1756
4. Christian H. was born on October 18, 1757
5. John was born July 2, 1760, and died March 16, 1761

On July 3, 1760, the day after John, their youngest child, was born, Susanna died of natural death.

“In the year 1768, May 24, have I, Jacob Brubaker, and Peter Martin’s daughter, named Maria, entered into a state of holy matrimony.” All other records say that his second wife was Mary Bear; evidently, she was a widow but was Peter Martin’s daughter.

In the year 1770, there was born to us a daughter May 8. With all my might, I pray that God may send his strength to the child and us, and indeed also upon all men through Christ’s name. (This must have been Mary, the second child to survive)

Jacob Brubaker and Susanna Steinman Stoneman had the following children:
i. GIRL3 BRUBAKER was born on 30 Aug 1752. She died on 02 Aug 1753.
ii. TWINS BRUBAKER was born on 12 Sep 1753.
iii. ELIZABETH BRUBAKER was born on 17 Sep 1755. She died on 01 Jan 1756.
iv. CHRISTIAN H. BRUBAKER was born on 18 Oct 1757. He died in 1823. He married (1) ELIZABETH HERSHEY. He married (2) VERONICA HERSHEY.
v. JOHN BRUBAKER was born on 02 Jul 1760. He died on 16 Mar 1761.
vi. MARY BRUBAKER was born on 08 May 1770. She died in 1804. She married ABRAHAM BRUBAKER. He was born in 1761. He died in 1808.

3. ABRAHAM BRUBAKER (Hans John1) was born in 1723 in Hempfield Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He died in 1804 in Near Luray, Page County, Virginia. He married Barbara Long, daughter of Paul Long and Barbara Miller, in 1758. She was born in Zwei Brucken, Pulatinite, Germany.

Notes for Abraham Brubaker:

Occupation: Plantation Owner Abraham Brubaker, a pioneer, came to the Valley from Pennsylvania in 1733. Abraham and Barbara Long Brubaker lived near Luray. Their house was burned in an Indian Attack in 1758.

Hans third son was Abraham. Hans had purchased two tracts of land containing 500 acres in 1735 located Near Luray, Virginia. Abraham purchased this land from his father and probably was married and living in Virginia before his father died. (Taken from Brubaker and Their Lands by Landis H. Brubaker)

Abraham and his wife Barbara BOUGHT the town of Woodstock from the heirs of Jacob Miller. This has brought on a lot of confusion for Brubaker researchers. Some find it difficult to distinguish if his wife was Barbara Miller or Barbara Long. At this time, I chose to believe that is Barbara Long. Abraham was one of the original colonists into Massanutten Colony in now what is called Page Co., Virginia, along with his wife’s father, Paul Long.

On April 20, 1774, Abraham Brubaker was granted to the Vestry on Beckford Parish, two adjoining lots in the Town of Woodstock. Each lot contains one-half acre of land for the purpose of building and supporting a church for public worship, a churchyard, and a place of burial of the dead. On one of these lots in the center of the town was erected a log church, and in this building, Mr. Mahlenberg officiated. (Taken from the Archives of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia)

Notes for Barbara Long:

Barbara Long, daughter of Paul Long, B. 1711, D. 1759. She was the granddaughter of Philip Long B. 1678, D. 4 May 1753. Philip lived on a farm now owned by the heirs of C.D. Price, dec’d. Seven miles S.W. of Luray. At this home is an old fort built by the first Long.

It is said that Barbara at about dusk the day before the Indian attack, Mrs. Brubaker told her husband that she had seen Indians encamped on the mountain (two miles away) and that she was certain they would be attacked the next day. She begged him to take them away to a place of safety, but he made light of her fears. Certain in the knowledge that a raid was in the offing, she went about her work the next day with a watchful eye in that direction and her infant in her arms.

No record exists of her receiving anything from her father’s estate, which was settled after her death. (Taken from Brubaker’s and their Lands by Landis H. Brubaker)

Notes for Abram Buckwalter:

Deed Abstracts indexed Lancaster County Pennsylvania Deed Book A – K 1729 -1766 reads: H-108 11-4-1762; 212 a., Lampeter twp., James Paterson and w. Ann mortgaged to Abraham Buckwalter (Satisfied 1767)

Unsure if this is Anna’s Abraham or Another.

This mortgage would have taken place about the time in which Abraham and Anna would have been married.
