This index of typed obituaries range in dates from 1902 – 2011 and was compiled by David Parsons, who wished it to be shared on ‘The Lawrence Register’ website.

These obituaries are persons associated with descendants of the Lawrence County, Ohio Hardesty/Lake Atlas family trees and were typed exactly as they were first published in the newspapers. Most of the newspapers are from Ironton, Ohio, Huntington, WV, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Point Pleasant, WV. Even though this is not a complete list, it is important material for the genealogist.

Walke Wells 2001 Huntington Herald Dispatch – (Saturday, Mar 24, 2001)   WELLS WALKE, 83, of Hanging Rock, companion of Nellie Pierson, died Thursday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. He worked at Dayton Malleable Iron Co. Also surviving are four daughters, Lena Jo Osborne of Pataskala, Ernestine Lunsford of Sardinia, Mary Hargett of Beaver Falls, Pa., and Janet Foreman of Ashville; one son, Wells Calvin Walke of Bethel; and two sisters, Lena Miller of Springfield and Margaret Vogelsong of Bradenton, Fla., Funeral 11 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton; burial in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton. IRONTON TRIBUNE – (Sunday, March 25, 2001)   Wells Walke – December 28, 1917 – March 22, 2001   Hanging Rock – Wells Walke, 83, of Hanging Rock died Thursday at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, KY. The Lawrence County native was born December 28, 1917, a son of the late Henry and Tena (Lena)  Miller Walke. He was the husband of Nellie Pierson, who survives. He worked over 35 years for the Dayton Malleable Iron Co. of Ironton and attended the Ellison Street Church of the Nazarene. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Garnet L. Murnahan Walke; one son-in-law, Donald Lunsford; and two grandsons, Billy Joe Foreman and Bobby Wells Foreman. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters and sons-in-law, Lena Jo and Bob Osborne of Pataskala, (Ohio?), Ernestine Lunsford of Sardinia, (Ohio), Mary and Marshall Hargett of Beaver Falls, Pa., and Janet and Billy Foreman of Ashville, (NC?); one son and daughter-in-law, Wells Calvin and Sheryl Walke of Bethel, (Ohio); two sisters Lena Miller of Springfield, Ohio, and Margaret Vogelsong of Bradenton, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Walker Thelma Hysell 1988 Huntington Herald Dispatch – Huntington, WV – (Saturday, April 30, 1988)   Mrs. Thelma L. Walker, 83, of 153 Iroquois Trail, Ona, WV, died Thursday, April 28, 1988, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, WV. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Beard Mortuary, Huntington, WV, by Dr. Lawton Searcy.  Burial will be in Ridgelawn Memorial Park.  She was born August 9, 1904, in Cabell County, WV, a daughter of the late William W. and Clara B. Our Hysell.  She was a member of the Highlawn Baptist Church.  Surviving are her husband, Donald W. Walker Sr.; three daughters, Mrs. Paul J. (Dorcus) Elliott and Karen W. Ellis, both of Huntington, WV, and Mrs. Clay A. (Gloria) Cupp of Woodford, VA.; one son, the Rev. Donald W. Walker Jr. of Martinburg, WV; one sister, Opal Gould of Huntington, WV.; one brother, William W. Wall Audrey Moore 2002 Huntington Herald Dispatch – (Monday, March 11, 2002)    AUDREY E. MOORE WALL, 89, of Miller, wife of George Kenneth Wall, died Saturday. She was a bus driver for Fairland School District. Also surviving are one son, Tewey Wall of Chillicothe; and one daughter, Libby Eplin of Barboursville. Graveside services 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville.  
Wall Charles B 1982 Ironton Tribune – (Thursday, November 4, 1982)      Charles B. Wall, 77, of Scottown, died Tuesday evening in St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born February 22, 1905, in Scottown, a son of the late Rev. J.J. and Nora Jones Wall. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and served on the school board over 28 years with the Symmes Valley and Windsor Local School Districts. He was a member of the Scottown Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Whitrock Wall, in 1978. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Sharl) Hinkle Ona, W.Va.; three sons, Bethel G. Wall, James Evan Wall and Charles Belton Wall, all of Scottown; two sisters, Mrs. Edythe Sheets of Fairborn, Ohio, and Mrs. Frank (Arlene) Simms of Broken Arrow, Okla.; one brother, C.J. Wall of San Diego, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Scottown Methodist Church by the Rev. Everett O’Neill and Emery McCallister. Wall Emma Null 1957 Ironton Tribune – (Monday, February 11, 1957)     Mrs. Emma Wall   Death claimed Mrs. Emma G. Wall, 85, this morning at 3:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Iris Massey, Greasy Ridge. Mrs. Wall, widow of David W. Wall, had been ill some time and critical the past two weeks. She was born near Scottown November 22, 1871, daughter of the late William and Missouri Clark Null. She and Mr. Wall were married in 1889 and spent their lives in the Scottown neighborhood; he died in 1935. Mrs. Wall was a member of Guyan Valley Baptist Church. Survivors include these children; Clarence Wall of Proctorville; Roy Wall of Columbus; Leo Wall of Springfield; Mrs. Mabel Robinson and Mrs. Inez Isom, both of South Charleston, Oh.; Mrs. Sofia Whitrock of Wilgus and Mrs. Iris Massey of Greasy Ridge. Also the following brothers and sisters; Dennis and Orange Wall, Mrs. Sylvia Payne, Mrs. Patty McLaughlin and Mrs. Rebecca Thompson, all of Burlington, Oh.; Mrs. Georgia Campbell of Huntington; Mrs. Ada Dunfee of Scottown; and 36 grandchildren. Three children preceded her in death. Body is at Philips Funeral Home pending completion of arrangements.
Wall George K 2002 Huntington Herald Dispatch – (Wednesday, May 15, 2002)     GEORGE KENNETH WALL, 91, of Miller, widower of Audrey Moore Wall, died Tuesday in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington. He was retired from Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Survivors include a son, Tewey Hall of Chillicothe; a daughter, Libby Eplin of Barboursville; and a brother, Willard Wall of Huntington. Wallace Charles F 1976 Pt. Pleasant Register – (Saturday, October 30, 1976)     Last Rites Are Set for C.F. Wallace   Charles F. Wallace, 76, of Point Pleasant, and formerly of Gallipolis Ferry, died Friday in Pleasant Valley Hospital after a short illness. A lifelong resident of Mason County, he was a retired farmer, a member of the Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ. Born in Gallipolis Ferry, September 2, 1900, he was the son of the late Jessie Wallace and Martha Henry Wallace. He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Jones Wallace, three sons and one daughter. Survivors include four sons, Sam, Robert, both of Dayton Ohio, Lee of Orlando, Fla.; Curtis of Gallipolis Ferry; one daughter, Mrs. Wanda Thompson of Dayton; two sisters, Mrs. Bessy Burris of Gallipolis Ferry; Mrs. Nellie Kinnaird of Point Pleasant; 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Church in Gallipolis Ferry with Rev. Charles (Tommy) Kinnaird officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Waller Floyd C 1978 Ironton Tribune – (Wednesday, Oct. 4, 1978)     Floyd C. Waller – Following a lingering illness, Floyd C. Waller, 94, of Ironton, died Tuesday at a local nursing home. Born October 18, 1883, he was a son of the late William and Mattie Dawson Waller. A retired meat cutter and operated his own meat shop and was employed with Kroger Company. Mr. Waller was a member of the South Point A&FM Lodge 497; Odd Fellows Lodge; was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I and attended Baptist Church. His wife, Lucetta, died on March 5, 1978. Survivors include two sons; Lawrence Waller of Ironton; Brown Waller of Forest Dale; four daughters, Mrs. John (Maxine) Brammer of Ironton; Mrs. Averill (Geraldine) Brammer of South Point; Mrs. Clyde (Ellen) Carrico of Willow Wood; Mrs. Clarence (Edna) Bell of Ashland; 22 grandchildren; 52 Ray grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. John (Evalene) Thacker of Gallipolis. Waller Lawrence F 1989 Huntington Herald Dispatch – (Tuesday, June 27, 1989)   Lawrence F. Waller, 65, of Ironton, died Sunday at Lawrence County Medical Center. He was born March 8, 1924, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Floyd and Lucetta Corbin Waller. He was a chemist for Allied Chemical, Barrett Division. He was a member of Eagles of Ironton, Veteran of Foreign Wars of Ashland, Ky., and United Commercial Travelers of Ironton. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Eakins Waller, in 1984; two sisters; three brothers; and one daughter, Lana Dee Waller. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Sharry) Smith of Ironton and Mrs. John (Debbie) Humston of Lebanon, Ohio; one son, Stephen Waller of Ironton; two granddaughters; six grandsons; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Edna Bell of Ashland and Helen Carrico of Getaway. Services are Wednesday at 1 PM at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 9 PM today at the Funeral Home.
Waller Lucetta Corbin 1978 Ironton Tribune – (Monday, March 6, 1978)   Lucetta R. Waller, 92, of Ironton, died Sunday morning in Lawrence County General Hospital. She was born August 3, 1886, a daughter of the late George and Martha Williams Corbin. She was a member of Myrtle Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Floyd Waller; four daughters, Mrs. Averill (Geraldine) Brammer of South Point, Mrs. Clyde (Helen) Carrico of Willow Wood, Mrs. John (Maxine) Brammer of Route 3, Mrs. Clarence (Edna) Bell of Ashland, Ky.; two sons, Lawrence Waller of Ironton, Ralph Waller of Deering; one sister, Mrs. Georgia Waller Smith of Ironton; 22 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph and William Waller. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Tuesday at the O’Keefe Baker Funeral Home, with the Rev. L.F. (Ted) Swartzwelder officiating. Waller Patsy Carey 1994 Ironton Tribune – Thursday, May 15, 1994      Patsy Waller May 7, 1926 – May 3, 1994 South Point – Patsy E. Waller, 67, of South Point died Tuesday at Lawrence County Medical Center.   The Lawrence County native was born May 7, 1926, the daughter of the late Oscar and Roselia Freeman Carey. She was the wife of the late Donald William Waller Jr. She was a member of the Sheraton Baptist Church, where she was Assistant Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Lawrence Village Bible Class. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Schneider Funeral Home, with the Rev.’s John Haney and Ric Fraser officiating. Burial will be in Getaway Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Funeral home. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Carey. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Robert E. and Margaret Waller of Centerline, Mich.; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold ‘Bunt’ Carey of South Point; and one sister, Nancy Bartram of South Point.
Waller Ralph O 1988 IRONTON TRIBUNE – Tuesday, May 31, 1988   RALPH O. WALLER   Ralph O. Waller, 61, of Route 1, Ironton, died Saturday at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.   He was born January 22, 1927, in Lawrence County, son of the late Floyd and Lucetta Corbin Waller.   He was an employee of South Point Ethanol Plant and a former employee of Allied Chemical Corp. He was a World War II veteran.   He served as deacon and trustee of Storms Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Freda Baker Waller, to whom he was married in 1947; two sons, Roger Waller of Gainesville, Fla., and Dean Waller of  Ironton; one daughter, Brenda Waller of  Ironton; one brother, Lawrence Waller of  Ironton; two sisters, Helen Carrico of Willow Wood and Edna Bell of Ashland, Ky.; and one granddaughter, Mitzi Waller of Gainesville, Fla.   He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services are Wednesday at 1 p.m. at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home by the Rev. Jim Orrick. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Wallis Alden A 1991 Point Pleasant Register – (Thursday, March 28, 1991)   Alden A. Wallis, 65, of Southside, died Wednesday, March 27, 1991, and Putnam General Hospital in Hurricane. He was a farmer and construction worker; a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Point Pleasant; Order of the Elks, Gallipolis, Lodge No. 107, Boilermakers Union Local No. 667, Charleston and honorary member of Mason County Post No. 23 Club. Born December 2, 1925 in Gallipolis Ferry, he was a son of the late B.C. and Nora E. (Mink) Wallace. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry Wallis. He is survived by three sons, Roger of Southside, Charles of Gallipolis Ferry and William (Bill) of Louisa, Ky.; two daughters, Jane Bradley of Gallipolis and Cheryl Richardson of Moreno Valley, Calif.; two brothers, Jake D. Wallis of Point Pleasant and H.C. ‘Duck’ Wallis of Southside and nine grandchildren. Service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, March 30, 1991 at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home with Rev. Point Pleasant Register – (Tuesday, November 23, 2004)     Francis Belle Wallis   Francis Belle (Yester) Wallis went home to be with the Lord November 22, 2004, at her home after a short illness. She was a beloved mother, mother and friend. She attended Faith Gospel Church and Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va. She and her husband operated Wallis  grocery for many years. Born December 12, 1922, and Mason County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Ollie (Northrop) Yester. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Wallis; and infant daughter; brothers Otho Yester, Joe Yester, Albert Yester and Gerald ‘Pick’ Northrup; and and a sister, Margaret (Yester) Rainey. She is survived by two sons and daughters in law, Benny and Ann (Harper) Wallis, and Terry and Diane (Rayburn) Wallis, all of Gallipolis Ferry; three daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene (Wallis) and Kenneth Hayes of Pomeroy, Ohio, and Marlene (Wallis) and Olin Blain Jr., and Gail (Wallis) and Larry Chapman, all of Gallipolis Ferry; a sister, Doris (Yester) Wamsley of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Booty (Yester) and Bert Rainey of Point Pleasant; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Born June 3, 1897, at Apple Grove, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elvira Conrad Wallis. He was a retired grocery store owner and farmer, a veteran of World War I, a member of Barton Chapel Church and attended Bellemeade United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Stella Shank Wallis, and by a son, Sylvan Wallis. Surviving are his wife, Lucy Billups Wallis; two sons, W Brooklyn Wallis, Point Pleasant, and William Wallis; Lancaster, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs Francis Henry, Apple Grove, Belva Plants, Troy, Ohio, Rilla Edmonds, Point Pleasant, and Alma Stewart, Chesapeake, Ohio; four brothers, Frank and Orlando, both of Henderson, Millard, Southside, and Earl, of Gallipolis, Ohio; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Thursday in the Barton Chapel Church at Apple Grove with the Rev Brian Blair and the Rev Bobby Woods officiating. He was born February 26, 1928 in Gallipolis Ferry, son of the late B.C. and Nora Etta Mink Wallis. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Alden R. Wallis. He was a retired employee of the State of West Virginia and former employee of the C & O Railroad. He was a US Air Corps veteran of World War II, member of the American Legion Mason County # 23 and the Loyal Order of Moose, Point Pleasant Chapter # 731. He is survived by four sons, H. (Hillard) C. Wallis II of Southside, Jerry A. Wallis, Robert D. Wallis and Steven D. Wallis, all of Gallipolis; one daughter, Penny Lynn Williamson of Southside; one brother, Jake D. Wallis of Point Pleasant; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home at 1 PM Friday with the Rev. Marlin Campbell officiating. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Bessy (Meadows) Lee and Laura Kathleen (McKinney) Wallis; three brothers, Harry, Alvin R. and Hilliard ‘Duck’ Charles Wallace. He is survived by two daughters, Connie Moore of Las Vegas, Nev.; and Carol Click of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Natalie McDonald, Thomas Moore, Richard Moore and Amy Conte; several great-grandchildren; nephews, Roger, William ‘Bill’, H.C. Born April 29, 1927 in Beardsford, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late John McKinney, Sr. and Nancy Alice (Snow) McKinney. She was also preceded in death by sister, Jo Ann Varney, and brother, John McKinney, Jr.Surviving are her husband, Jake D. Born April 17, 1901 in Mason County, she was the daughter of the late George and Lilly Leach Mink. She was a member of Faith Gospel Church in Gallipolis Ferry. Wallis was proceeded in death by her husband, B.C. Wallis 1969. She was also proceeded in death by one son, Harry Wallis, three sisters and three brothers. He was born January 1, 1916, in Lawrence County, a son of the late John and Eva Jane Broughton Walls. He spent his life in this area and served in the Air Force during World War II. He was an ordained Baptist minister serving at the Johnstown Baptist Church, Union Baptist Church and Old Baptist Church, W.Va. He retired in 1967 from Kyova Pipe Company.  Survivors include his wife, Maria Hart Walls, whom he married in December 1936; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Joan) Belcher of Kitts Hill; three sons, Woodrow W. Walls Jr. of Kitts Hill, Larry R. Walls of Houston, Texas, and William D. Webb, 96, of Hillsboro, formerly of Coal Grove, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009 at Highland District Hospital in Hillsboro. She was born April 17, 1913 in Leatherwood, the daughter of the late William and Electa Jane Keeney. Mrs. Webb was a noted cook and pie baker and was employed in several restaurants in Coal Grove. She was a member of the Tri-State Baptist Temple in South Point and had been a member of the Leatherwood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death on Jan. 27, 1978 by her husband, Jerry Webb, whom she married Feb. 17, 1933. Following Mr. Webb’s death she moved to Hillsboro to be near her family. Va.; and her loving friend and caregiver, Nicole Neville of Hillsboro. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Art Fisher. Webb Nancy Hackworth 1950 IRONTON TRIBUNE – (Tuesday, June 20, 1950) MRS. NANCY J. WEBB Mrs. Nancy Jane Webb of South Point Route 1, died this morning at 2:20 o’clock in General Hospital where she had been a patient during the past week. She suffered a stroke 10 years ago and had since been ill. Mrs. Webb was the widow of Rev. J. H. Webb, who died in 1921. She would have been 83 years old next November 2. She was a daughter of the late George and Susan E. Hackworth and had been a member of Leatherwood Baptist Church for 60 years. Mrs. Webb was the first born in a family of 13 children and was the last of the immediate family to die. Surviving her are these children; Mrs. Oliver G. Lein of Michigan, Thomas of South Point, John E. of Ironton Rt. 2, Mrs. Harold Rader of Butler, O., Rev. Nelson Webb of McRoberts, Ky., Lewis of South Point. Two children preceded her in death. Nineteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive as do several nieces and nephews. The body is at the Tracy Brammer Funeral Home and will remain there until probably Wednesday evening, when removal will be made to the home of her son Thomas of South Point Route 1. Webb Thomas F W 1994 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, Feb. 29, 1994) Thomas Webb July 18,1918 – Feb. 25,1994 MIDDLETOWN – Thomas F. Webb, 75, of Middletown died Friday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. The Leatherwood native was born July 18, 1918. He was the husband of Loraine Webb, who survives.   He was a teacher for four years in Lawrence County, where he taught in a one-room schoolhouse. He was a teacher and administrator in Middletown schools for 32 years retiring in  1974. He became manager of the Middletown Teachers Credit Union, serving until 1984.  He was a member of Rotary and a founder and longtime director of Community Resources Workshop in Middletown, where he had lived since 1941.  He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving in World War II and in the European Theatre. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in  Middletown for 45 years, where he served on various boards and as a Sunday School teacher.  Funeral will 2 P.M.. Monday at the First Baptist Church in  Middle town, with the Rev. John Dick officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 7-9 P.M.. today at the Breitenbach-McCoy- Leffler Funeral Home. White, of Greasy Ridge, died Thursday at 7 am at his residence after a long illness.Mr. White, formerly a foreman with the State Highway Department, had operated a barbershop at Hecla for the past eight years.   He was born in Lecta on July 6, 1905, son of the late James and Bertha Myers White.   Mr. white was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church at Greasy Ridge for 25 years and served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher and choir leader. He was also a member of Wilgus Grange and U. C. Mr. Wickline was born June 30, 1885 in Waterloo, son of the late Robert Morris and Mary Howell Wickline. He spent his entire life on the farm where he died. In 1911 he was united in marriage to Gussie Herrell, who survives. Mr. Wickline was a farmer and butcher by trade. He was a member of Symmes Valley Grange and Waterloo Methodist Church. Wilds Joseph W 1951 Ironton Tribune – (Wednesday, August 8, 1951)     Wilds   About 10:30 a.m. yesterday, Joseph W. Wilds, 73, died of a heart attack while talking with friends at the courthouse at Fourth and Center streets. He was removed to General Hospital by Phillips ambulance but was pronounced dead upon arrival there. Mr. Wilds had been to a local doctor’s office yesterday morning prior to walking to Fourth and Central where he suffered the fatal attack. A son of the late Joseph and Sara Thompson Wilds, he was born at the Vesuvius Furnace on July 19, 1878. He was united in marriage to Maude Burns and they resided at Etna for years. She died March 8, 1941. Ever since the death of his wife, Mr. Wilds resided among his children and at time of his death was living with a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Rowe at 620 Wyanoke Street. He was a coal miner and later worked at Ironton Fire Brick. He retired three years ago due to ill health. Five children preceded him in death. He leaves the following children; Mrs. Maude Kelley of Pedro; Jarvis Wilds of Ironton; Mrs. Garnet Walbright of Ironton; Joe Wilds of Warren Hill; Mrs. Rebecca Daniels of San Antonio, Texas. Two sisters, Mrs. Mary Washburn of LaGrange and Mrs. Dorothy Richardson of Buchtel, Ohio, also survive. He was a member of Pedro Redmen’s Lodge and of Etna Methodist Church. She graduated from Dawson-Bryant High School and was a former employee for Ohio Bell Telephone Co., here in Ironton. The Sites’ resided at 709 S. Fourth St., Ironton before moving to Florida. Mrs. Sites was a member of the Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and father, survivors include three sons, Mike, Mark and Doug Sites; three grandsons, all of Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Homer (Jean) Hankins of Gallipolis and Mrs. Robert (Emily) Little of Nashville, Tenn.; two brothers, Gerald Brammer of Ironton and John Brammer of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was a life member of VFW Post 8850 and a member of Ironton Eagles. He was a member of Jeffersonville Missionary Baptist Church in Coal Grove. He was raised in Deering and spent most of his life in the Coal Grove area, where he attended Coal Grove schools. He also was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Lee Willis, four brothers, Robert Willis, Eugene Willis, Glen Willis and Herbert Willis; two sisters, Virginia Johnson and Opal Deeds; and two half brothers, Ray Willis and Roy Willis. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James Richard and Judy Willis of Georgetown, Ky.; a daughter-in-law, Dee Dee Willis Case of Kettering, Ohio; a granddaughter, Sarah Ashley Willis of Kettering; two sisters, Helen Noble of Rustburg, Va., and Ruth Yates of Coal Grove; and a special friend, Thelma Brumfield of Ironton. Willis Rebecca Steele 1923 Morning Irontonian – (Sunday, February 25, 1923)     Rebecca Steele (Willis), daughter of Thomas and Margaret Steele was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, April 12, 1853. She was united in marriage to Wyatt Willis in September 1876. To this union was born 10 children, four sons and six daughters, three of whom have preceded her in death. She is survived by her aged husband and the following children; Mrs. John F. (Ada) Keeney, Mrs. Lonnie (Eva) Carrico, Albert Willis and John Willis, all of South Point, Ohio. Thomas Willis and Mrs. C. (Clarence) H. (Maggie) Keeney of Ironton, and Mrs. Walter (Etta) Wood of London, Ohio. Several years ago she accepted Christ as her Savior. While she never joined any church, she lived the life of a Christian. She was a devoted wife and an affectionate and an indulgent mother, a kind and obliging neighbor. For 46 years she and her companion trod life’s pathways together. Peacefully she sank to rest February 22, 1923, aged 69 years, 10 months and 10 days. She leaves three sisters, one brother, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her departure.

The Kitts Hill native was born March 2, 1921, the son of the late Green and Ethel Simpson Wilson. He was the husband of Jean McCoy Wilson, who survives. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold Wilson and Kenneth Wilson; and one sister, Dolores Wilson. He was a retired operator for Allied Signal in South Point, where he worked for 28 years. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a Baptist. He was a 1941 Kitts Hill High School graduate and a 1950 Marshall College graduate. He spent all his life in the Kitts Hill area. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Andrea Jean Wilson of Kitts Hill; one son, Kevin Eugene Wilson of Kitts Hill; one brother, Robbie Wade Wilson of Kitts Hill; and one sister, Irene Holschuh of Kitts Hill. Wilson, Gertrude. Mrs., 1965 Palladium-Item, Richmond, Indiana Sunday, 5 Sept. 1965. Ex-Local Pastor’s Wife, Veteran Educator, Dies- Mrs. Gertrude Wilson, wife of REV. J.H. Wilson, former pastor of the First Christian Church here, died at her home, 212 Kinsey St., late Saturday morning. She was 77 years old.,Death followed a lingering illness.
A native of Bartramville, Ohio, she was a retired teacher with 41 years of service, including three years in Indiana, five years in the Christian Church Academy at Livingston, Tenn., age 33 years in Florida. She was a past president of the American Federation of teachers of Florida and was founder of an elementary public school in Hollywood, Fla.
Before her retirement she was selected by the U.S. Office of Education to serve on a regional committee which aided the teacher exchange plan between the United States and Great Britain.
She was an active member of the honorary teachers’ organization, Delta Kappa Gamma, Eta Chapter, of Muncie and also of Florida.
She was a member of First Christian Church here and was active in its various programs. Rev. Wilson was pastor of the church from 1938-1949. For the past 13 years, she and her husband had been engaged in church work in six different states and 23 churches.
She is survived by her husband; one step-daughter, Mrs. Paul Runge of Richmond; three brothers, Homer Brammer of Eaton, Ind., and Mauck Brammer of Ossining, N.Y.,; two sisters Mrs. Olive Draper of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mrs. Crystal Cox of R.R. 1, Muncie.
Services for Mrs. Wilson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church…friends call at the Jones and Placke Funeral Home. Burial will be in Union Cemetery at Eaton, Indiana.
Wilson Greene B 1952 Ironton Tribune – (Saturday, April 26, 1952)      Greene Wilson, 63, Willow Wood, died today of injuries suffered in a traffic accident last Monday on State Route 217 near Andis. Mr. Wilson was a passenger in a truck owned by Lester Simpson and on alighting his clothing was caught by the rear end of the truck and he was thrown. He was admitted to the hospital at 6:00 PM Monday. The deceased was born September 30, 1889, at Willow Wood, a son of the late Welcome and Mary Ann Kelley Wilson. Thirty-three years ago he was united in marriage to Ethel Simpson. Survivors are the widow; four sons, Arnold and Bob, both of home, Eugene of Kitts Hill and Kenneth of the U.S. Army; and a daughter, Mrs. Irene Holschuh of Kitts Hill. He was son of the late Azro and Lizzie Payne Wilson. He had lived his entire life in Coal Grove and attended Coal Grove schools. He was a former employee of Foster Stove Co. and Chamberlains for 18 years. He was a custodian at Monitor School from 1962 until his retirement in 1981. He served during World War II, 11th Division of the Air Force, for four years. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church from 1937 until the time of his death. He was treasurer of the Men’s Bible Class for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Dillon Wilson; two sisters, Lenny Wilson and Pearl Dickens; one brother, Raymond Wilson; and one nephew, who was raised in the home, Raymond Alltop. Survivors include his wife, Josephine Chinn Wilson, to whom he was married in 1969; two sisters in law, Eva Spears and Mary McGuire; one niece, Ernestine Price; and several nieces and nephews. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Hilgenberg Wilson, whom he married in 1951; six children, Wanda, Gloria Sue, Sharon Kay, James Edward, Manuel Lee, and Michael Dean, all at home; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Jones of Ironton, Mrs. Myrle Spears of Kitts Hill, Mrs. Thelma Tussey of Greenup, and Mrs. Rosie Henderson of Scottown; and two brothers, Grover Wilson of Kelley’s Bridge, and Ira Wilson of Hanging Rock. Wilson Melvin E Sr 1962 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, March 18, 1962)     Melvin Wilson Sr.   A native of Lawrence County resident, Melvin Wilson, Sr., 84, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arnold Berry at Myrtle Ridge, near Kitts Hill, Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Mr. Wilson was born on Yellow Creek, near Linnville, March 6, 1878, a son of Bronson and Vilinda George Wilson. He spent his entire life on the farm there. In 1905 he was united in marriage to Lusettie Kelley, who died in 1939. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Orlie (Maxine) Wright of Willow Wood, Mrs. Arnold (Charlene) Berry of Myrtle Ridge; Mrs. Callie Schafer of Ironton. Born in Germany, January 12, 1880, she came to the US when she was one year old. She was married to James Wilson, and they moved to Ironton in 1923. Mrs. Wilson has resided in Cincinnati since 1934. Mr. Wilson preceded her in death while they resided here. She leaves five daughters, Mrs. J.B. O’Riley of Lagrange, Ill.; Mrs. Clarence Kauts and Mrs. Robert Mormon, both of Cincinnati; Mrs. L. (Lawrence) J. Gallagher of Ironton and Rose, and home; two sons, Walter of Van Nuys, Calif.; and Edward of Charlottesville, Va. Two sisters, Francis Kloedner (Kloecner) of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Anna of Tucumari, New Mexico also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted in Cincinnati Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Theresa Church on Prince Hill (Cincinnati). The body will arrive here at the O’Keefe Funeral Home Tuesday evening and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

He was born March 10, 1904, in Atlanta, Ga., son of the late James and Rosemary Kloecker Wilson. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. He attended Ironton City Schools and was a graduate of Russell High School. He was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After leaving the Navy, he resided in Orange, Calif., for a number of years, returning to Ironton two years ago. Winegar, a daughter, Beverly Kay Samuels, four sisters, Sylvia Burcham, Wilma Tagg, Louise Chisam and Darlene Fraley and three brothers, William E. Burcham, Bernard Burcham and Freddie Burcham, also preceded her in death. She was a member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church; Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 9738; and Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ret. Air Force Capt. Gary E. Winegar and Karen J. Winegar of Pensacola, Fla.; five grandchildren, Lisa Jordan and her husband Dr. Charles Jordan of Derby, Kans., William L. Samuels of Irvine, Calif., Air Force MSgt. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with Dr. David B. Lemming and the Rev. Earl Shelby officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born October 26, 1917, at Huntington, a son of the late Erman E. and Inez Denney Winegar. He was a retired press operator for Huntington Alloys, retiring in 1980, and was a member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in the South Pacific, and participated in the capture of Iwo Jima. He was a life member of VFW Post 9738 and was an avid bowler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Kay Samuels in 1984; and a sister, Mary Winegar Triplett. Surviving in addition to his wife are one son and daughter-in-law, Capt. Gary E. and Karen Winegar, U.S. Air Force, retired, Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren, Lisa and Dr. Charles Jordan of McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., William L. Samuels of Tucson, Ariz., and Sgt. She was born June 18, 1901, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Slack Truchoweski. Mrs. Wineka was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Surviving in addition to the husband are; a brother, Andrew Truchoweski of Ironton and several nieces and nephews. Requiem Mass will be solemnized Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Church. Survivors include the wife, Eloise Murnahan Wineka; three sisters, Mrs. Jack (Nellie) Brammer and Mrs. Arthur (Mayme) Tyo both of South Point, and Mrs. Frank (Ida) Gibson of Waverly, Oh.; two brothers, Merlin Wineka of South Point and Charles E. Winton Patricia Harmon 2010 Danville and Rockingham Co from March 17 to March 18, 2010     Patricia Harmon Winton   Patricia Harmon Winton, 81, of 159 Ashwood Place Danville, VA died Monday, March 15, 2010 at the Stratford Rehabilitation Center. She had been in declining health for the past nine months. Mrs. Winton was born November 12, 1928 in Huntington, WV, the daughter of Russell Harmon and Maude Goodall Harmon and was the last survivor of her generation. She lived most of her life in Chesapeake, OH until relocating to Danville in 1992. Mrs. Winton was a graduate of the Chesapeake High School Class of 1947 and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Teresa Chapter in Proctorville, OH. She was retired from Owens-Illinois Glass Company. Mrs. Winton was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church. On February 12, 1952 she was married to Daniel E. Winton, he died December 23, 2004. Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Winton Anderson and her husband, Robert E. (Bob) Anderson of the home and two grandchildren, Wendy Hall of Green Bay, VA and Chuck Anderson of Ringgold; eleven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. from the graveside at Floral Hills Memory Gardens by Pastor Austin Merricks. Wolfe, 70, of Ironton, died at the home of a son, Charles Wolfe, 2013 S. 8th St., Sunday at 3:40 p.m. Mrs. Wolfe was born at Kelley’s Bridge on May 12, 1888, daughter of the late Allen and Sarah McCaffrey Kelley. She was married to the late Grover Wolfe in 1910 and they live in Estel, Ky., until his death in 1929. Since that time she has resided with a daughter, Mrs. Ethelene Leith, of Ironton. She was a member of the Oakland Evangelical United Brethren Church. Surviving in addition to her son and the daughter are two other daughters, Mrs. Alice Meyers of Troy, Ohio, and Mrs. Peggy Lewis, of Ironton; and 11 grandchildren. (Peggy) Woolwine, 43, of 111 Grove St., Coal Grove, was found dead at her home at 3:30 p.m. Friday by her husband, Robert J. Woolwine. Lawrence County Coroner Dr. Harry Nenni said she was found on the couch with a plastic bag tied over her head and death was ruled a suicide. Mrs. Woolwine was born in Ironton, a daughter of Mrs. Hilda Lipker Phelps of Ironton and the late Jonah T. Phelps. She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1945, and had resided in Coal Grove for the past 20 years. Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Robert, whom she married on December 31, 1948; two daughters, Barbara Lee and Rebecca, both at home; a sister, Mrs. William (Mary Alice) McCarthy of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; a brother, William Phelps of Odessa, Texas; and her grandmother, Mrs. Mary Lipker, a resident of Fountainhead Nursing Home. He was a 1942 graduate of Coal Grove High School and was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II. He retired after 30 years from Allied Chemical and he was a member of Coal Grove United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Phelps Woolwine, and a brother, Tom Woolwine. Wray William A 1948 Point Pleasant Register – (Friday, February 13, 1948)     W.A. Wray, Farmer, Dies at Apple Grove William A. Wray, 81, a retired farmer and widely known resident of Apple Grove, died yesterday morning at his home following a brief illness. Mr. Wray was born December 19, 1866, at Ashton, a son of the late C.F. and Mary Waugh Wray. He had spent the greater part of his life in Mason County area. Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Blanche Grover Wray, a son, William W. Wray of Charleston, a brother, John Wray of Columbus, Oh., and two sisters, Mrs. Etta (Thomas) Hannah of Cottageville, Oh., and Mrs. Fannie (Joseph) King of Apple Grove. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Beale Chapel, with burial in the Chapel Cemetery. The Rev. Earl Purdue will officiate. Pallbearers who have been selected are Messrs. Randall Hogsett, Joe Hogsett, William Kirk, John Hanley, Campbell Stevens and John Sayre.
