Submitted by: Carolyn & Greg Higgins

Ranks of Civil War veterans in Lawrence County suffered additional loss Friday evening when Mr. Winters of Sheridan answered taps. The end came at the home of his son Charles at the age of 92 years. Mr. Winters was born on Dec. 23, 1841, near Sheridan, the son of George and Eliza Winters. Practically his entire life was spent in Lawrence county, being a resident at all times except those years he spent in the service of his country.

He served through the war as a scout for the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and was wounded before the Battle of Colt Harbor while on scout duty. He recovered and served an additional enlistment before suffering an attack of fever. Following his honorable discharge from service, he returned to his home county and resided there, working a farm in the Sheridan neighborhood.

He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Safford on May 5, 1867, and six children were born to their union. The wife and mother died twenty years ago, and one child, Leota, died in infancy.

Surviving children are Mrs. Wm. Brubaker of South Point, John of Detroit, Charles of Sheridan, Mrs. G. W. King of South Point, and Mrs. Oscar Thompson of Columbus. Mr. Winters was the last of his family. He resided with his son Charles, and death came there Friday at 6 p.m. after a brief illness with influenza. He had been an Ice Creek Baptist church member since boyhood and was also a member of Dick Lambert Post, G. A. R.

The body is at the Charles Winters home at Sheridan, and the last rites will be conducted there Monday at 2 p.m. with burial in Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Bingaman and Jones.
