To Mr. Thomas Hamilton, the Register and its readers are indebted for the following list of the soldiers dead whose bodies are at rest in the various cemeteries in and around Ironton, together with the military service, and with few exceptions, the date of death, or burial of each, now published the first time. Mr. Hamilton has compiled the list after several months of research in the records of the G. A. R. Post, at several cemeteries and among friends and relatives of departed veterans. The residents of this community will appreciate its value as a local military record.

WOODLAND CEMETERY

Ironton, Ohio The following is an alphabetical list of soldiers interred in Woodland Cemetery. Of these, fifty are in the Soldiers’ Lot. The list is not complete, as it is known that twenty other soldiers, whose military service (in the War of the Rebellion and former wars) has not yet been ascertained, are buried in that cemetery. Correctness as to the statement of service and date of death, or burial, is not vouched for as to everyone in the list given. Applications have been forwarded for sixty-nine headstones for unmarked graves in Woodland. With a few exceptions, all the other graves of soldiers therein have been permanently marked by stones or monuments by relatives of the deceased. Still, as to a large majority, the inscriptions do not indicate that they ever served in the army or navy. Several unmarked soldiers’ graves in Kelly’s, Henry’s, and other cemeteries cannot be located, and it is impossible to ascertain the military service and dates of death of quite a number known to have been buried in these old cemeteries. Any reader who may have knowledge of an omission, or find an error in the statement as to the military service, or date of death, in the list following is requested to leave a written statement or correction with William Dillon, a janitor at Memorial Hall, or mail same to Thomas Hamilton, Quartermaster of Dick Lambert Post, G. A. R. The G. A. R. Post not only wants to secure the permanent marking of all unmarked soldier’s graves in the cemeteries at and near Ironton but a permanent record of the service, etc., of all deceased soldiers, interred therein.

KELLY’S CEMETERY

This cemetery is in an utterly uncared-for condition. It is known that a large number of bodies, perhaps more than one hundred, have been removed from it and reinterred in Woodland and other cemeteries. Many of the graves from which bodies have been taken have not been refilled or only partly refilled; one or more large trees are uprooted; headstones are down, many being broken and scattered about; grave lot fences are broken, decayed and rusted, and the ground, in great part, is a tangle of trunks and fallen limbs of trees, undergrowth, briars, and vines, with gaping holes and a litter of earth-piles and debris all about. The following is a list of soldiers’ burials in this cemetery, several of whom were killed or died of wounds received in battle. The mere names of several others known to be buried there are not given. Of the marked soldiers’ graves, five of the headstones have fallen over, two of them being broken into two or more pieces. Application has been made for twelve headstones for unmarked soldiers’ graves in this cemetery, and an additional application will be made for several more.

HANGING ROCK CEMETERY

The list of soldiers buried in this cemetery is incomplete. While several others whose names are known are interred in the cemetery, the military record of those in the following list has been verified. An application for six headstones for unmarked graves in this cemetery has been prepared. To get a headstone for the unmarked grave of a soldier, the name under which it was mustered, his rank, the company and regiment to which he belonged, and the date of his death must be correctly stated in the application. Any fact sent to the Post Quartermaster that will add to the compilation of a complete list of deceased soldiers buried in the several cemeteries in or near this city will be appreciated by Dick Lambert Post G. A. R. and may result in the permanent marking of some unmarked grave that would otherwise remain forever unmarked, and soo become unknown.

 HENRY’S CEMETERY

This is the oldest burying ground at or near Ironton. It is reported that two or more bodies of original settlers were interred in it before the beginning of the century, now ending, recently ended, or a little over one hundred years ago. Three other graveyards were used as burial places by early settlers. Men now living, some not over 50 years of age, have seen them or evidence of their existence. However, they were long since obliterated, one by the encroachment of the river, one by the building or operation of an ironworks plant, and the other by “eminent domain,” which gives a railroad corporation a right of way over anything and anybody. The ground enclosed and known as “Henry’s Graveyard” was long since turned over to the Township Trustees by the owner, who, following the “course of empire” westward, died in Missouri. As of other private cemeteries, no register of burials in Henry’s can be found, if any was ever kept. The number of soldiers buried therein is not known, but it is reported that there are no fewer than twelve. The Q. M. of Dick Lambert Post G. A. R. has secured the names of only seven, six with military service records being given in the following list, only one of the graves of soldiers being reported as marked. One of the men named below was killed in a skirmish in Wayne County, W. Va., and another “died, on hospital boat, of wounds received in action,” as stated in the “Report of the Adjutant General of Kentucky, 1861-1866, while another died a victim of the smallpox epidemic of 1881, presumably in the pest house, which is located near the cemetery.

Efforts (to be continued) have been made to obtain a list of the soldiers buried therein but have so far failed.

CONCLUSION

The names in the above lists included those of men of all classes and professions in civil life, and their publication will awaken emotions of pleasure and sorrow and recall the memory of many still-living incidents connected with the lives and services of the dead, both before, during and after the war of the Rebellion. No such list has ever before been published in any newspaper. To the God-created man, hampered, or bound by time-serving leaders, want of knowledge, prejudice, custom, lack of money or greed for wealth, who, with others, is creating tragedy in the belief that only irremediable political and industrial oppression and suffering exist; (as a result of “Destiny;”) that this is an uninteresting, unheroic age, in which only self and self-interest should engross his time and attention; to him especially, or to any living man, the soldier dead, in the language of essayist and of the poet, might say, if they could speak: Apart from whirlwinds of cannon musketry, which for a season darkened the air and are but superficial phenomena, you are witnessing what we witnessed, the tragic, the romantic, the miraculous. Overhead the infinite Deep, with greater and lesser lights, bright-rolling, silent-beaming, hurled forth by the hand of God; around you, and under your feet, the wonderful list earth, and (unaccountable of all) yourself, standing there. The all-encircling, mysterious tide of Force, thousandfold, billows shoreless on; bears you along with it; you, too, are a part of it. Oak trees fall; young acorns spring. Men, too, new-sent from the Unknown, of tiniest size, wax into stature, into the strength of sinew, passionate fire and light; in other men, the light is growing dim, the sinews all feeble; they sink motionless into ashes, into visibility, return to the Unknown, beckoning you their mute farewell. Generation after generation (thousands of them, from the unknown beginning,) so loud, so stormful busy, rushed torrent-wise, thundering down, down, and fell all silent (only some feeble re-echo, which grew ever feebler, struggling up), and Oblivion swallowed them all. Thousands more, to the Unknown Ending, will follow; thou there (in the present age) hangest as a drop still sunlight, on the giddy edge, one moment, while the Darkness has not engulfed thee. O Brother! is that what thou callest prosaic, of small interest? Awake, poor troubled sleeper; shake off thy torpid nightmare dream; look, see, behold it, the Flame-image; splendors high as Heaven, terrors deep as Hell. This is God’s Creation; this is Man’s Life.

In the future that is still there on Earth,

In spirit and with the mute appeal, we implore thee:

So live, that when thy summons comes to join

The innumerable caravan which moves

To that mysterious realm where each shall take

His chamber in the silent halls of death,

Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night,

Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed

By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave

Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch

About him and lies down to pleasant dreams.
