Burial Index

The burial index below lists persons in Lawrence County, Ohio, cemeteries abstracted from cemetery books in the Briggs Library Local History Department.

In the 1980s, the Lawrence County, Ohio Genealogy Society started reading old cemeteries, which was continued by myself and others for many years. The Genealogy Society printed those findings into books, which you can purchase through their website.

Many of these cemeteries are gone, and tombstones are destroyed due to elements of nature or vandalism.

The Lawrence Register has been aware of missing names and cemeteries since this list was last updated. Please help keep this index current by contacting us about any corrections, suggestions, or additional names, cemeteries, etc.

Hi Martha, thank you for taking the time to look for names. They are all in my tree, Selena Enicks, married W.H. Childers, he and Alexander (married Sarah Goodall) are brothers of Robert. I appreciate thetime you took to research Childers in the book.

I’m concentrating my search on local records and see your name mentioned on different sites. I have so many question and wondering if you are the person to ask here on Lawrence Register or should I concentrate on the Briggs library or Kyowva FB ?

I spent hours reviewing the FB page for Lawrence Register and found references to Childers however the posts were 11years old. I’m not sure anyone would see it if I comment after all this time.
Can you point me in the right direction for research? I have more than one family name but all from Lawrence and Huntington. Thank you so much!

    Hi Carol,

I finally had a chance to check the books for the names you mentioned. Unfortunately, there were no listings for any of the names in the Low Gap Church books. However, there were the following persons with the last name of Childers:
A., Alexander, Alexandria, America, mother, Salena, Sarah (Goodall).

To answer your question, Yes, it looks like he had a monument at one time.

I look forward to meeting with you this summer and thank you for your comments.
    Martha

Martha how sweet of you to offer to walk the cemetery with me. We will have our trailer and be visiting family along the way. Leaving California early June but haven’t finalized plans. I’ll keep you in the loop as it gets closer.

Hello Martha, Thank you for the information about Low Gap Cemetery. I have a few questions if you have time. I am planning a trip this summer to visit my ancestors graves . How would I locate the graves, is there a cemetery manager I could speak to? You mentioned the graves were read in 1999 and I found my Robert Childers on page 16 of 39 on the link. No dates are listed however it does list his Civil War regiment – from that, can I assume he has a military marker?

Regarding the books, yes they are very expensive on Amazon. Would you mind looking to see if the family was a member of the Old Union Baptist Church?
Robert Childers: 1836-1896 his spouse Amanda (Farris) Childers 1837- abt.1905 daughter Filona or Lona Childers (married Sanson) 1869-?
    Thank you so much,
    Carol

    Hi Carol,

Low Gap Cemetery is located on Route 243 at Bradrick.

Coming east on Route 7, turn left at 243 (Bradrick). At the top of the hill, you will see a small store to your right and a church next to it. Between the church and the store, there is a road called Browning Road. Here is a link to the cemetery on The Lawrence Register with photos.

The Cemetery is directly on your left, just a few feet past the church and the store. You will see a sign “Low Gap Cemetery.” Low Gap Cemetery was a part of Union Baptist Church in Union Township.

I suggest purchasing these books about Low Gap (Old Union Baptist Church).

Since they are pricy on amazon, try calling Briggs Library to see if they have a copy. I do have copies that I can search for you if you let me know what information you would like to search for and the names and dates.

Hello, In your index I found my ancestor Robert Childers (d: 1896) buried in Union Twp, Low Gap Cemetery. So far I am unable to locate any information on Low Gap and I’m wondering if it’s name was changed. His wife Amanda (Ferris) Childers (d: abt 1905)and daughter Filona should be buried near him but I cannot locate a record of the burials. Also, he was a veteran of the Civil War and should have a headstone indicating this.

If you have any information to help my search I would appreciate it.

Hello Emily, Thank you for your comment. Briggs Library is closed right now and we don’t know when it will reopen. What record are you talking about, I might be able to help you. Before retiring, I was the Manager of the History Department.

    Hello,
I am working with a prospective DAR member and think I see a name needed on the list, George W Spears. Would it be possible to get a copy of the record in the Briggs Library Local History Dept? I am hoping this is the correct George W Spears as they were living in Lawrence Co OH in Bradrick on the 1940 census. He is listed with his wife Josephine Wells or possibly Hyden (first husband) and their daughter Jenna Lee Spears who was 8 years old *she was born 4 Sep 1932′. George William Spears father James Spears was buried in Ross Cemetery but when I did search I could not find George William Spears.
