The height of the [Ohio] river became an interesting subject last week. It was the general topic on the street for a day or two following extensive rains throughout the river valley. The water did not come high enough to do any damage or cause serious alarm.
The highest point reached was two feet below that of a year ago and about 17 feet lower than during the flood of ’84. The lowest lands occupied by dwellings in West Ironton were not reached. The water washed just over the 50-foot mark on the river grade and began falling Friday noon. It has receded slowly and is now at the 40-foot mark.
Greater damage resulted from the rapid rise of Rachel creek in East Ironton than from the backwater, several of the cross streets being covered Thursday morning so that the majority of scholars in the East Ironton school building arrived at the building in such a condition that the schools were dismissed.
