This date March 28, 1949, is a day we remember because that evening the greatest cooperative event in city history took place in the basement social rooms at the Presbyterian Church when a “49’er Club” was organized and $6,479.00 in gifts pledged for the celebration of Ironton, Ohio’s Centennial.
The celebration held October 8-15 that year was described by the late Congressman Thomas A. Jenkins as the “third largest thing in Ironton’s history, ranking next to the city’s founding by John Campbell in 1849, and the building of the city’s flood defense system in 1937.”
With orchids for the living and roses for the departed, we like to recall a few names from our diary of memories, among the living who gave unselfishly of their time and talent for seven months were:
- Dr. Chester A. Casey
- Matt A. Cloran
- Ted Allyn
- Bill Baker
- Henry M. Stanley
Among the departed were:
- Fred Wagner
- Harry W. Eckhart
- B. F. Scherer
- Art Turnbull
- E. O. Meistedt
- Jack York
- Mort Wiseman
- H. B. “Doc” Riley
Of course, there were many others including:
- George Hugger, chairman of the city council
- Clarence Feil, president, of the Chamber of Commerce
- Waldo Bowman, president Jaycees
- Walter Neumann, chairman of Kiwanis Club
- T. Charles Cloran, president of Rotary
- Ron Springer chairman, Lions back in ‘49
