Did you know: It cost 25 cents to mail letters in the early days and the fee was paid by the recipient of the letter not the sender like it is today.

    Shelley,
Thank you for your comment and I hope someone may have a photo, and if I ever find one I will surely post it online.

My father was born in Scottstown (Parents Noel and Katherine Callicoat—grandpa Perry Callicoat) I am looking to see if there are any photos of the postmasters. I have an ancestor Ellwood Stephens who was the postmaster of Wilgus in 1881. I don’t have many photos and thought I would look at this site. I saw that a previous post mentioned Burke Callicoat—he was my great grandpa’s brother—small world.

Hi Janie and welcome to “The Lawrence Register!

I can relate to your comment, because my grandmother was also born in 1902 and I lived next door to her growing up. I loved hearing her stories she told us kids about her growing up in Lewis County, Kentucky and never grew tired of them. She passed away in 1998, also at the age of 96 and I miss her everyday.

I hope someone in your family takes the time to write about your grandmother’s stories to preserve them for future generations. My own grandmother’s book of her stories are cherished by all her children grandchildren today.

What a lovely comment, if you would like to share those stories, I would be honored to put them on my website!! This website was started in 1996 with contributors just like yourself!

Thank you so much for your comment!!
    Martha

My grandparents grew up in the Scottown and Polkadotte townships. My grandmother’s name was Iva Sowards and she married Burke Callicoat.
Iva worked in the Polkadotte Post Office with John Wickline. I believe he had also (John) been her school teacher. She was so good about telling us stories about growing up out in the country. She was born in 1902 and lived to be 96, living last in Proctorville/ Rome area. I loved hearing their stories of the old days and how they enjoyed telling them. I was blessed that I thought to ask her to write some of them down for us. I believe her book goes up to the early 1950s. What a wonderful treasure it is to our family!
