14 Taken in Raid

Ironton, March 22 – Fourteen persons were nabbed in a raid on a Third Street home Saturday.  Mae Davis Lewis is charged with having untaxed whisky in her possession. Portsmouth Daily Times, Portsmouth, Ohio, Monday 22 Mar 1937, page 4


2 Found Slain Near Ironton

Man, Woman, Each Shot 3 times, Discovered on Lonely Road

Ironton – A man and woman, both about 40, were found shot to death on a lonely road, 12 miles northwest of here early today.  Sheriff Bernard Monte said it apparently was a case of double murder.

Monte identified the woman as Mae Davis, whom he described as an Ironton police character.  He said the man was Evans Barnett, who was a township dry officer during prohibition. Each was shot three times. News Journal Mansfield OH 26 June 1937


Find Moonshine

Vanceburg, July 10 – Russell Brown, 23 a farmer of Firebrick, Kentucky, was arrested by Deputy U.S. Marshals Dorsey Keaton and Lee Stewart on a Federal warrant charging him with manufacturing illegal liquor.

At his home, the officer said they found 10 gallons of mash and 50-gallon copper still. Brown was taken to Catlettsburg to await trial. Portsmouth Daily Times, Portsmouth, Ohio, 11 July 1937, page 1
