Moonshine Still Found in the Penitentiary

Distillery is Found in Pen Scioto County, Ohio Prisoner Blamed – 1916

Columbus, August 28 – An embryo moonshine distillery has just been unearthed at the penitentiary it is reported. Guards, it is said, caught Charles Mims, Scioto county forgery, stealing corn and molasses from the prison kitchen. Mims, who is said to be a former Kentucky moonshiner, worked in the prison barber shop. To convicts getting a shave, it is said, Mims would give a “tonic” that possessed the “kick” of a real “eye opener.”

Charles Mims was convicted in the local court of common pleas several months ago on a charge of forgery. He had secured employment at the home of John E. Williams as a chauffeur. A few days afterward, he forged a check upon Mr. Williams. Little was known about his past life. He claimed he was originally from North Carolina, having escaped from the State Penitentiary there.[1]
