No Date or Source was Given
Jesse Rule, 42 years of age and married, was stabbed to death at Catlettsburg, Ky., at four o’clock Friday afternoon by Fred Burchett.

Rule and his wife, who keep a dairy farm at Pollard, Ky., were spending the fourth with the latter’s father, J. J. Sturgill, in Catlettsburg. At about four o’clock, Rule started uptown to get his horse and buggy to start home. He met a friend, Alex Lark, and they dropped into Storms’ saloon for a drink.

A timber run in Big Sandy had brought a crowd of timbermen to the town, and the saloon was crowded with men. In one party were G.W. Burchett of Culbertson, Boyd Co. Ky. All were drinking, and Harry Burchett and Lark got into a squabble over some old affair. Cline mixed up in the quarreling by jostling Rule, naturally inferring that he sided with Lark as the two were together. Rule protested against the actions of Cline and was finally compelled to knock him down.

At this juncture, Fred Burchett drew a knife and, with the remark: “Let me fix him,” stabbed Rule in the left breast, inflicting a wound
which caused death in ten minutes.

Burchett was arrested, was arraigned this morning, and made an application for release under guard. This was refused, and he was returned to jail to await a hearing Tuesday morning.

Rule, the murdered man was an ex-councilman and ex-grocer at Catlettsburg and was a popular man in the community. He returned last ??? from the Klondike and started a dairy at Pollard. He has a brother Edward (Doc) Rule, in Ironton, and his father lives in Sheridan. He was a former resident of this county.

The funeral services were held Sunday under the auspices of the Maccabees. The verdict of the coroner’s inquiry was wilful murder.
