The Wyandot Pioneer, Upper Sandusky, Ohio, 30 June 1853 – M. Barney [Reynolds] Paige, a man of intelligence and good education, hung himself in the Lawrence County, Ohio, jail on the 17th inst. In a letter to the Judge of the Court, he asserted his innocence of any intention to commit the crime (grand larceny, by way of the river) with which he was charged but said he was employed to do so by another man, not knowing but that his employer was the owner of the lumber. He further stated that he had been subject to partial fits of derangement at times and injured himself by using ardent spirits.
PAIGE, B. R. or “Reynolds Paige” Ironton Register June 30, 1853 – On Friday morning of the 17th inst., as the indictment against him read, he was found dead in his cell in the jail of this county, having hung himself by means of his handkerchief and a short piece of rope tied together. He had been in jail for weeks, charged with attempting to steal lumber and shingles and run them off by the river. In a letter, he asserted his innocence of any intentions to commit the crime, as he was employed by another for whom he was supposed to be the owner and stated that he was subject to partial derangement at times and had made too free use of intoxicating liquors! He was from somewhere in the East, of respectable connections, and well-educated. His case excites much sympathy.
