Rev. James Mays

Rev. James Mays is a native of Pike County, Kentucky, born January 5, 1828.  His father, James Mays, died on March 28, 1859.  His mother’s name is Elizabeth (Rowe) Mays. 

They settled in this county in 1845.  Mr. Mays married Linda Webb in this county, on February 11, 1847, where she was born on April 26, 1830. 

Their children are: 

  • Mary A., born February 9, 1848, died February 11, 1849;
  • Julia A., June 28, 1850, resides at home;
  • Amos C., November 25, 1852, died April 6, 1876;
  • Jefferson, January 21, 1855, died in 1858;
  • Pricy M. (Bronton), April 3, 1858, resides in this county;
  • Elizabeth J., August 13, 1860, died September 13, 1862;
  • Sarah A. (Ankrim), August 17, 1863, resides at home;
  • James Mays, junior (a grandchild), on October 26, 1874, resides at home. 

The parents of Mrs. Mays are Elias and Jane (Gilliland) Webb.

Mr. Mays was a soldier in the war of 1861.  He enlisted on October 13, 1861, in the 1st West Virginia Light Artillery.  After serving nine months he was taken sick and discharged for disability, at Williamsport, Maryland. 

He enlisted again on September 22, 1864, in the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. 

Two of his brothers also served in the army. 

  1. Davidson Mays in the 1st West Virginia Light Artillery.  He enlisted in 1861, was disabled by a fall from a caisson, and was discharged in 1862. 
  2. George W. Mays enlisted in 1864, in the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. 

Mr. Mays was justice of the peace one term, in 1858.  He is a farmer and minister of the gospel, residing in Fayette Township.  His post office address is South Point, Lawrence County, Ohio.
