The Ironton Register of July 2, published at Ironton, Ohio, contained the subjoined article concerning the death of Mrs. Mathilda Burcham, grandmother of Mr. Louis Burcham who is situated at Wilbert in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The obituary was handed a representative of the South by Mr. E.B. McCorkle who was born and raised in the same county as was Mr. Burcham, but didn’t meet him until they both came to Louisiana.

The Register says:

During the last month, the grim reaper has called a number of the older residents of Scott Town and vicinity to the other shore. The oldest of these was Mrs. Mathilda Burcham, who was 100 years, 2 months, and 26 days old at the time of her death.

Mrs. Burcham was the widow of Nathaniel Burcham, who died about twenty-four years ago. She was a native of North Carolina and came to this country eighty-one years ago.

She is survived by the following children:

  • Nathanial
  • John
  • James
  • Jessie
  • Mrs. Susan Nance
  • Mrs. Caroline Harvey, all of Scott Town
  • Mrs. Mary Rose of Millersport
  • Mrs. Elizabeth Sowards of WV
  • Flem Burcham of Greasy Ridge

Besides these, she is survived by sixty-three grandchildren, 177 great-grandchildren, forty great great grandchildren, and fifteen great great great grandchildren.
