Lawrence County – connections to noted people

We have compiled a partial list of Lawrence County, Ohio, residents who, in some part, are connected to prominent people. This list is incomplete; we will continue to update it as we find more names to add. If you know anyone we should add, please leave a message in the comments below.

Clooney, Rosemary – a nationally known actress, lived in Ironton at one point.

Cyrus, Billy Ray – musician and singer – lived on Sixth Street in Ironton in the 1990s.

Field, Marshall – millionaire merchant king of Chicago, married Nannie Scott of Lawrence County—founder of the Marshall Field’s Department stores.

Julian, William Alexander – Treasurer of the United States, was married to John Campbell’s granddaughter.

Marlowe, Julia – Sarah Brough – became a famous Shakespearean actress who once lived in Ironton.

Legend, John – current musician and singer – descends from the Polley Family that settled in Lawrence county in the 1840s.

Polk, President James K. – great niece married an Irontonian – see Jesse Roland Norton

Rankin, Rev. John – famous Abolitionist – died in Ironton; granddaughter married George Noah Gray; the Gray home is now the Lawrence County Museum.

Sharp, Joseph Henry – famous Indian artist, one of the founders of Taos, NM. His father was a merchant in Ironton and was close friends with the Norton family.

Sweet, Fanny – real name Rachel Minerva Brown – became a notorious New Orleans, LA courtesan, known from coast to coast for her escapades. Allegedly born in Rome, Township in 1826.
