Judge Sylvester McCown – Probate Judge – 1857 re-elected 1860

1857 – 1861 (he resigned due to his approaching death) – Succeeded by  Judge C. B. Egerton

Obituary, Ironton Register, Thursday, March 14, 1861

In Ironton, Ohio, on Tuesday, 12th inst., after a protracted illness, Judge Sylvester McCown, aged 56 years.  His remains were taken to Millersport, Ohio, for burial today – Thursday.

Judge McCown was a native of Kanawha county, Virginia.  For a time, he resided in Cabell county, WV, whence he moved, in 1839, to Millersport, where he was engaged in mercantile pursuits for some time and was for many years a well-known Magistrate of Rome township.  In the fall of 1857, he was elected Judge of Probate of Lawrence county, and on assuming the office duties, he moved to Ironton in February 1858.

During a residence of over three years in this town, he acquired the respect and confidence of our people to more than an ordinary degree and had the goodwill of everybody.  He was a faithful and excellent public officer and was re-elected Judge of Probate at the October election of 1860 by a very large majority – 839.  Because of his approaching dissolution, he resigned a week or two since.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He was fully conscious to the last, and shortly before his death wrote minute directions about his coffin – which was “to be a plain coffin, dressed and varnished, made either of cherry or walnut – to be neatly lined” -“in white letters on the top of the coffin, “I come to lie down with my children” the coffin was encased in a rough box, made to fit securely on a bier, which will make.”  A kind and obliging man and a good citizen have departed.
