Judge Daniel C. Jones – Common Pleas Judge 1926 – 1937
Ironton Tribune, Monday, August 11, 1952 – Judge Dan Jones, Well-Known Jurist, Dies in Hospital.
Judge Daniel C. Jones, 73, Lawrence County Common Pleas Court Judge from 1926-1937, and one of the city’s most widely respected and well-known attorneys, died at the Lawrence County General Hospital at 11:20 this morning. Judge Jones had been hospitalized for one week and in failing health for several years.
He was a native of Oak Hill, Jackson County, born there on December 18, 1878, son of the late Evan C. And Margaret Parry-Jones. He was educated in Jackson schools, graduating from the High School there. A graduate of Ohio State University and the Law School, where he was second in his class, Judge Jones was a Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic fraternity member.
He came to Ironton in 1905, where he and the late A. R. Johnson formed the law firm, Johnson and Jones. Later, the firm was enlarged to Johnson, Jones, and Cooper. It was Johnson, Jones, Jenkins, and Jeffreys in later years. On June 17, 1908, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret B. Jones.
The Ironton attorney was elected to the Common Pleas post in November of 1926 and served in distinction until February 9, 1937. The Ironton judge, known for his jurisprudence and wisdom in legal matters, was called upon many times to serve on the bench in other sections of Ohio.
Following his retirement from active pursuits, Judge Jones endeared himself to business people in the downtown area through frequent visits. He enjoyed passing the time of day with acquaintances and delighted in making new friends.
He was a member and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church; was affiliated with the Ironton Lodge No. 177, BPOE; held membership in the F. and A. M. and Knights Templar lodges in Jackson and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity at Ohio State University. He was also a member of the Rotary Club.
Judge Jones was a member of the American Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Lawrence County Bar Association. He was a director of the Etna Building and Loan and a past director of the Citizens National Bank.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Margaret B. Jones; one daughter, Mrs. Willard S. (Helen) Breon, Coshocton; one granddaughter, Miss Kathryn Ann Breon of Coshocton and the following sisters: Mrs. H. H. Stephenson, Misses Elizabeth, and Edna Jones, all of Jackson, one sister, Susie, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Baker Funeral Home, with Rev. H. E. Felty officiating. The interment will be in Fairmont Cemetery, Jackson.
The body is at the funeral home, where friends may call after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
