I.R. Dec. 9, 1875 – Dr. Egerton has been appointed Infirmary Director in place of J. H. McGee, who resigned.  The appointment is an excellent one.


DEATH OF DR. EGERTON

           

Dr. Charles B. Egerton, one of the most honored residents of Lawrence county, died at his home near Rockwood, Friday afternoon.

Dr. Charles B. Egerton, one of the most honored residents of Lawrence county, died at his home near Rockwood Friday afternoon.  His fatal illness was of brief duration, but he had been ailing for some years.

Dr. Egerton was born in Northfield, Vt., on March 6, 1825.  After acquiring an education, he came to Ironton at the age of 27 years. He entered the practice of medicine with the late Dr. N. K. Moxley, Sr.  After several years, he became a member of the drug firm of Moxley, Barber & Egerton, which was not a success, and the business was given up.  In 1860 Dr. Egerton was elected Probate Judge and served three terms, after which he engaged in the real estate business until 1876 when he moved to the farm where he died.

Dr. Egerton was prominently identified with the public institutions of this community and was a leading spirit in the development of the industrial of the locality.  He was a member of the first board of trustees of Woodland cemetery and the first board of the Episcopal Church.  He was a member of Lawrence Lodge F. & A. M., of this city, had been for almost half a century.  By his death, Lawrence county lost one of its most intellectual and progressive citizens and one whose memory will always be associated with the early scenes of local history.

The deceased leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss.  The latter is County Treasurer C. B. Egerton, Jr., ex-County Surveyor Jas. T. Egerton, both of Ironton; William A. Egerton and Mrs. Elizabeth Shaw of Huntington, W. Va.

The funeral was held at R. Mather’s Sunday at 1:30, the services being conducted by Rev. W. H. Hampton.  Miss Scofield, Miss Murdock, Mr. Carl Moulton, and Mr. Ed Scofield sang.  H. C. Burr, V. Newman, F. C. Tomlinson, J. C. Snyder, Jere Davidson  and E. Bixby were the pallbearers.  The remains were interred in the beautiful Woodland Cemetery.
