Joseph Massie

Joseph Massie was born in Monroe County, Virginia; his parents are Jonathan and Mary (Gore) Massie, who settled in this county, on December 25, 1830. 

The first wife of Joseph Massie was Mary A. Miller, who was the mother of ten children, namely: 

  • Isaac, born November 4, 1841, died February 7, 1879;
  • Jonathan, August 31, 1843, resides in Mason;
  • Vinson, June 7, 1845, resides in Mason Township;
  • William, October 9, 1847;
  • George, May 25, 1849, resides in MasonTownship;
  • Alexander, November 15, 1851, resides in Mason Township;
  • Mary C., March 15, 1853;
  • Rachael E., October 1855, resides in Mason Township;
  • Nancy A., November 16, 1860; Alice, July 6, 1863. 

The date of Mrs. Massie’s birth was June 23, 1823; the date of their marriage was November 25, 1840. 

  • Jonathan Massie is married to Serina Howard;
  • Vinson married Eliza Neil, and she died March 16, 1881, he was then married to Catherine Paine;
  • William is married to Jennie Harford;
  • George is married to Mary Coates; Alexander is the proprietor of a store at Greasy Ridge;
  • Mary C. married T. J. Tagg;
  • Rachael married LeRoy Payne. 

The second wife of Mr. Massie is America Harris, who was born December 14, 1843; they were married May 25, 1873. 

Their children are: 

  • Sarah E., born May 1, 1874;
  • Ross E., October 27, 1875;
  • Effama, August 26, 1881.   

Creed W. and Elizabeth (Neil) Harris are the parents of Mrs. Massie.  Mrs. Massie’s first husband was Henry Sowards; he died in the war. 

By this marriage were born two children: 

  • Creede F., born June 5, 1862;
  • Nancy E., on July 15, 1864, is deceased. 

Mr. Massie is a farmer of Mason Township.  Address Greasy Ridge, Lawrence County, Ohio.
