Rev. Joseph D. McKee was ordained to the ministry of the regular Baptist church on March 2, 1873, at South Point, Lawrence County, Ohio, by Rev. W. W. Davidson, James M. Kelley, and P. M. Robinson. He has been a faithful minister ever since.
He is a native of this county, born April 4, 1824. His father, William McKee, died April 24, 1858, and his mother, Sarah (Davidson) McKee, is also deceased.
The first marriage of Mr. McKee was in 1845 to Sarah L., daughter of William and Susan (Maddax) Lions. She was born February 15, 1824, and died in August 1857.
The following are the children by this marriage:
- Sarah, born March 2, 1846, died in October 1846;
- Milton, September 4, 1848, died May 1849;
- Vashti, April 8, 1850, resides in this county;
- Susan, July 18, 1852, resides at home;
- James, November 30, 1854, resides in Illinois;
- Dora, in June 1856, died in May 1857.
The second wife of Mr. McKee is Parthenia Pemberton, who was born in this county on February 21, 1841. Her parents are James and Lucy (Simmons) Pemberton. The former is deceased.
The following are their children:
- Richard, born April 17, 1859, resides in this county;
- Cora D., September 12, 1860, resides at home;
- Lucy B., October 2, 1862, died in July 1863;
- Lina Augusta, May 5, 1864, resides at home, as do all the rest;
- Sadie, October 5, 1866;
- Ernest R., December 12, 1868;
- Malinda, May 5, 1870;
- Curtis, July 12, 1872;
- Joseph, August 27, 1874;
- Gertrude, November 17, 1876.
Samuel McKee, a brother of Joseph, enlisted in 1862, in the 5th Virginia Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged for disability.
Three brothers of Mrs. McKee were also soldiers in the late war, Henry, Elijah, and William Pemberton. They all served their full term.
Mr. McKee is a farmer besides attending to his ministerial duties. He resides in Perry township. His address is South Point, Lawrence County, Ohio.
