John W. Handley was born in this township, on February 5, 1837. His parents came to this county in 1835. His father, Logan Handley, was born March 1, 1800; and his mother, Leatha (Roach) Handley, was born December 19, 1798.
John W. Handley was married in Symmes Township, October 5, 1865, to Martha L. Powers, who is a native of this township, born December 19, 1846. Her father, John Powers, was born February 5, 1818, and her mother, Mary A. (Wiseman) Powers, on May 23, 1817.
The family of Mr. John W. Handley is:

• Mary E., born July 29, 1868.
• John F., born September 20, 1870.
• Henry L., born August 26, 1873.
• George A., born January 24, 1876
Mr. Handley enlisted in July 1862, in Company D, 91st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving until the close of the war. The 91st passed through two campaigns, those of 1863 and 1864. The first was gone through successfully, without loss of life.
The second was one of almost unparalleled hardship and attended with great loss of life. The organization of the regiment began in July 1862, and in one month was over its quota. During the fall of 1862, the regiment saw comparatively little service but was preparing for the arduous work that was to follow.
The engagements in which this regiment took part were Buffalo, West Virginia; Fayetteville, Blake Farm, Cloyd Mountain, New River Bridge, Cow Pasture River, Lynchburg, Stephenson’s Depot, Winchester, Martinsburg, around Charlestown, Virginia; Opequan, Fisher Hill, Cedar Creek. The regiment arrived at Winchester, April 7, 1865, and was incorporated with the army of the Shenandoah, under General Hancock, forming a part of the first brigade, fourth provisional division.
After the surrender of General Lee, the army of the Shenandoah was in part disorganized. The 91st regiment remained at Winchester till the 2d of June 1865, when they were ordered to report to General Emory. The regiment was discharged from service on June 30, 1865, having served the government faithfully two years, ten months, and eight days.
Mr. Handley was a good and faithful soldier and performed his duty in every place he was called upon to act. Symmes Township is the place of his residence. Farming is his occupation. Address, Handley post office, Lawrence County, Ohio.
