John B. Melvin

John B Melvin was a farmer at Perry Township he was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, on 17 Aug. 1813 he was also married in this county on 8 Aug 1841 to Rhoda Gore who is a native of this county born on 14 October 1822.

His parents were Jonathan and Nancy A. (Broom) Melvin was among the pioneers of this county.  they settled in this county in 1803 his father died in 1851 at the age of 74 years and his mother died in 1865 at the age of 83 years.

Mrs. Melvin’s parents were William and Tabatha D. (Blankenship) Gore came to this county in 1820 her father died in 1881 at the age of 84 years and her mother in 1865 at the age of 73 years.

Mr. Melvin enlisted in 1861 in the 14th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and served 15 months, and was discharged for disability. His son James M. Melvin enlisted in 1865 in the 195th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served to the close of the war.

Mrs. Melvin had one brother and three half-brothers in the war.  James M. Gore enlisted in 1863 in the 5th Virginia and was killed at the Battle of Winchester, on September 19, 1864. 

Her half-brothers, Levi, Henry, and Isham Kelley, all served in the 5th Virginia, enlisting in 1861.  Henry served until 1863 when he was discharged for disability.  Levi and Isham served during the entire war. 

Mr. Melvin is the father of thirteen children, as follows: 

  • Baby, born February 5, 1843, died the same day;
  • William H., February 13, 1844, died August 20, 1852;
  • Asseneth J. (Rowe), November 22, 1846, resides in this county;
  • James M., May 24, 1847, resides in this county;
  • Jonathan A., January 5, 1849, resides in Boyd County, Kentucky;
  • Mary A. (Williams), November 17, 1850, resides in this county;
  • Tabitha E. (Humphreys), December 13, 1852, resides in this county;
  • John C., August 29, 1854, resides in this county;
  • Charles S., November 9, 1856, resides in this county;
  • Cornelius H., December 4, 1858, resides in this county;
  • Caroline D., February 16, 1861, died October 18, 1874;
  • Sarah E., December 31, 1862, resides at home;
  • William S., on March 31, 1865, resides at home. 

Mr. Melvin’s post office address is Rock Camp, Lawrence County, Ohio.
