James Porter

James Porter was born in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, on April 10, 1810.  His father, William Porter, died in Pennsylvania in 1816.  His mother, Mary (Smith) Porter, died in the same state in 1819. 

Mr. Porter was married in 1836 to Elizabeth, daughter of John and Mary Diter; she died in 1853. 

Mr. Porter’s second marriage took place in Ironton, this county, on April 24, 1853, to Elizabeth Broom, who was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, on April 18, 1818. 

The children by this marriage are 

  • William, born on February 14, 1854, resides in this county;
  • Rosie, born on March 17, 1857, resides at home. 

Mrs. Porter was married previous to this marriage, to Stephen Sparling.  They were married in 1836 and he died in 1837. 

One child was the fruit of this marriage: 

  • Jane, born April 11, 1837, resides at Clifton, West Virginia. 

Edward Broom, the father of Mrs. Porter, served in the war of 1812.  He was with General Hull when he surrendered his army, but he made his escape and returned to his command. 

William Porter, son of this sketch, was married September 12, 1878, to Emma J., daughter of Benjamin and Susan (Coe) Bayles.  She was born on October 28, 1856. 

They have the following children: 

  • Madgie, born August 30, 1879;
  • Roscoe, February 9, 1881. 

Mr. Porter came to this county in 1840.  He is the proprietor of coal banks, and also a farmer.  His residence is in Perry township.  Address, Forest Dale, Lawrence County, Ohio.
