Elliot Pemberton

Elliot Pemberton was born on August 4, 1832, in Lawrence County.  His father, John Pemberton, came to this county from Kanawha County, Virginia, in 1822; he found this county an unbroken forest, there were no roads, nothing but cow-paths; the county was very thinly settled.

He had to go twelve or fourteen miles to a mill, carrying his sack of grain on his horse’s back, and then having to use his horse to grind his own grain, and pay a toll in order to get his grist; this will show the disadvantages under which he raised a large family of children in the wilds of Lawrence County.

Schools were scarce; the families for ten miles up and down Symmes Creek used to meet at a certain point and help one another in house-raising, and also in educating their children.

Mary I. Corbin was the name of Elliot’s paternal mother.  Elliot stayed at home assisting his parents until he attained his twenty-first year when he commenced business for himself.

May 30, 1858, at the age of 26, he was married to Emmasetta Brammer, who was born in this county on December 18, 1838.  Her parents, Elijah G. and Anna (Langdon) Brammer, are residents of this county.  Shortly after his marriage, Mr. Pemberton built himself a habitation in the forest, where he has now located the flourishing township of Lawrence.

His father sold to Elliot’s brothers a portion of his farm, giving the remainder to Elliot, on condition that he would keep him the remainder of his days; the other children were dissatisfied and brought suit to recover the property, but were defeated, although the cost of the case caused Elliot to dispose of part of his property.

The children of Mr. Pemberton are

  • Nimrod, born June 2, 1859, died April 10, 1861;
  • Mary A., May 6, 1862, resides at home;
  • Amanda E. (Martin), June 3, 1864, resides in Lawrence county;
  • Charlotte, January 11, 1867;
  • Emma D., October 3, 1868;
  • Daisy, October 29, 1870;
  • Minnie D., January 22, 1873;
  • Estella, June 29, 1876;
  • Willie B., June 22, 1879—the last children reside at home.

Mr. Pemberton and four of his brothers were in the war of 1861.  Their names are

  • Clinton,
  • Elisha,
  • Elijah, and
  • Jasper N.

Mr. Elliot and three of his brothers were in the 173d Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  They all served during the war and were honorably discharged.  Elisha died in Nashville, Tennessee, in Hospital No. 10.  Mr. Pemberton is engaged in farming in Lawrence township.  His address is Rock Camp, Lawrence County, Ohio.
