Elisha T. Edwards and Mary A. Hastings were married in this county on September 6, 1855, and they have the following children:

  • John H., born November 10, 1856, died November 8, 1857.
  • Thomas C., April 3, 1858, resides at home.
  • Milton D., July 17, 1860, resides at home.
  • Frank M., October 23, 1863, resides at home.
  • Maudie, April 19, 1866, died September 1, 1870.
  • Emma D., December 29, 1868, resides at home.

Mr. Edwards was born in Davidson County, North Carolina, on May 1, 1834, and his wife is a native of this county, born November 4, 1839. Leonard Edwards, the father of Elisha T., was born in Granville County, North Carolina, on December 12, 1799, and died October 4, 1847.  He settled in this county in 1844.

The mother of Mr. Edwards, Polly (Hedgecock) Edwards, was born in Davidson County, North Carolina, on May 16, 1805, and died December 20, 1856.  The father of Mrs. Edwards, Alfred Hastings, was born in Carter County, Kentucky, in 1810, and is one of the oldest settlers of this county and is still residing there at the age of seventy-two years.  He came in 1825.

Malinda (Riggs) Hastings, the mother of Mrs. Edwards, was born in Boyd County, Kentucky, in 1817, and died in 1873.

Elisha T. Edwards served in the late war in Company F., 10th Kentucky Cavalry.  He enlisted in 1862 and was discharged as corporal of his company.  He reenlisted in 1864 in the 173d Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was commissioned second lieutenant, and was promoted to first lieutenant November 26, 1864.  He served as such until July 5, 1865, when his regiment was mustered out.

His brother, Charles S., was a member of Company F., 10th Kentucky Cavalry, in which he served thirteen months.  He reenlisted in the 173d Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A., as the first sergeant, and was promoted to the second lieutenant and transferred to Company F, same regiment.  He was discharged on July 5, 1865.  He was also a soldier in the Mexican war, under General Taylor.

Two of the brothers of Mrs. Edwards served in the war; Thomas Hastings serving thirteen months in the 10th Kentucky Cavalry, and reenlisting in the 188th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in which he served until the close of the war.  He was a prisoner and was paroled.  Samuel K. Hastings was in the 173d Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in which he served to the close of the war.  Mr. Edwards is a farmer and gardener of Perry township.  His address is South Point, Lawrence County, Ohio.
