11.  DAVID TODD10
BRUBAKER (DANIEL9, ABRAHAM8, ABRAHAM7,
HANS JOHN
6, HANS5 BRUBACHER, HANS HEINRICH4,
PETTER
3, PETTER2, RUTSCHLI1)
was born June 29, 1842, in Lawrence Co.,
Ohio, and died November 05, 1917, in Lawrence  Co., Ohio.
He married SALOME ARZELIA CLARK January 04, 1866, in Ironton, Lawrence
County, Ohio, daughter of WILLIAM CLARK and SOPHIA MCCLURE.  She was born April 09, 1845, in South Point,
Ohio, and died August 04, 1925, in Lawrence County, Ohio.

Notes for DAVID TODD BRUBAKER:

We all refer to David Todd as David. However, in my search and
contacts with people in the Southpoint, Ohio, area, he went by the name
“TODD”

The Ironton Register recorded David and Arzelia’s wedding on Jan
18, 1866 (However, it is recorded as David P. Brubaker and Arzelia Salome Clark)

David served in the 188th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the war
of 1867 until its conclusion under Captain Sumpter.  {taken from “1882 Hardiest Atlas page
H-27″}

David’s Civil War Papers show him as a Private of Company I – 188th
Reg Ohio Infantry as of Feb 15, 1865, age 21, height 5 foot 8 inches complexion
light, eyes blue, hair brown.

David is listed in the 1900 Lawrence County Census, Perry Township, pages 136-136B (Sheridan). He is listed as being 57 years old

David died at the age of 75
years four months, and six days.  His listed
occupation is as a Farmer.  At this time,
he is still listed as married {so Arzelia is still with him}.  His cause of death is listed as —–Angina
Pectoris with contributing factors of Mitral Insufficiency ——signed by Gno.
W. King November 7th, 1917, South Point, Ohio.
He was buried in the Brubaker Cemetery Ironton, Ohio, November 7, 1917  {taken from Certificate of death from Bureau
of Vital Statistics.}

I came across a Contract and Lease made between Daniel Brubaker and
his son David T. Brubaker in possession of Helen and Everette Leroy
Brubaker.  This lease is signed by
Daniel Brubaker, David T. Brubaker, and Salome A. Brubaker.  It pertains with the leasing of land on the
Ohio river, the upkeep of the mansion which stands there, allowing for Daniel
to live on three acres of this land, the well-being and care of David Todd’s
father Daniel, and the 1/4 return to Daniel Brubaker on all the crops which come
from this land, and also last but not least, the payment of $700.00 to Julia
Elkins, David T’s sister, over the course of 3 years following Daniel’s death, as
part of her inheritance from the Estate.
This contract was to have been binding for the entire natural life of
Daniel Brubaker, so he knew that he could be cared for the rest of his life in
the way in which he had grown accustomed to.
The date for this binding contract was June 11, 1866, two years before
the death of his father.

On the top of this contract is a note which reads: For Value Received, I hereby release all my

claim in and under this Instrument and the estate described herein.  Dated 1871 in Ironton, Ohio.  With Daniel’s death in 1868, I am wondering if
Julia Ann Brubaker Elkin wrote this statement upon payment of the
$700.00.  There is no signature following
the statement, but Julia is the only one of the children mentioned in the lease
as to having any claim to the estate…

Newspaper obituary read:

David Todd Brubaker, one of Lawrence County’s best-known and
highest esteemed residents, died Sunday night at 12:30 o’clock rather
unexpectedly. His death was a severe shock to his family and
friends.  Mr. Brubaker had been ailing
for one year, but his condition was not considered alarming.  Mr.
Brubaker was born June 1842 on the farm where he died.   He was a son of David D. and Margaret

Township page 136-136B (Sheridan).  She
is listed as 54 years old.  This marriage

February. 1892 – Nov 1895 held at the Briggs Library Hamner Room 321 S. 4th St.
Ironton, Ohio 4538.

Notes for HARRY HENRY BIMPSON:

Newspaper obit reads

Mr. Harry Bimpson of Kenova, a son of one of the pioneer residents of Sheridan in her palmy days, died Sunday at his home.  Mr. Bimpson was a splendid man and will be greatly missed by his community.  He was stricken with paralysis Sunday, death following the same day.  He was buried at Woodland Wednesday, and many of his friends came down to pay their last respects to their friend.  Mr. Bimpson was a brother of Mrs. Bess McCoy of this city and a cousin of W. H. Nigh.  both of whom attended the funeral.  Mr. Bimpson and Edward Gould of Chicago were their best friends in their youth, a friendship which nothing could mar.  He leaves a devoted wife and three children, Lillian, Roxy, and Stanley.  the latter only recently returned from the front in France. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

I came across an article in the 1882 Hardesty Atlas on a Joseph
Bimpson and Sarah N. Campbell.  They had
a son Henry H. Bimpson born Nov 5, 1865 (I don’t know if these are his parents or
not), But the time frame is about right for Vesta’s husband.

He was employed by the North and Western Railroad.

Lawrence County, Ohio; d. June 12, 1922, Mayville, Kentucky; m. CAROLINE HICKS;
d. October 1954.

Notes for JAMES KYLE BRUBAKER:

It is my understanding from the phone conversation with Mrs. Ennis
Austin, Kyle, and his wife Caroline ended up in Mayville, Kentucky.

Birth recorded in 1867, but no date or name is associated in
recording, it reads:

 David and Salome birth of
male 1867.

iii.     HENRY NELSON BRUBAKER, b. March 20, 1869,
Lawrence Co., Ohio; d. February 06, 1938, Lexington, Ky; m. BERTHA LEE WHALEY;
d. August 25, 1927, Mayville, Kentucky.

Notes for HENRY NELSON BRUBAKER:

Have a small article in the Ironton paper which says, Mr. Nelson
Brubaker, of Springdale, Ky, is at home for a two-week visit with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Todd Brubaker.

Dennis Brubaker (my father) remembers they visited Nelson when
they went out to Kentucky, where they also visited his son Paul.  Mrs. Ennis Austin confirmed on a phone
conversation that Nelson did go to Maysville, Kentucky, with his brother Kyle

I don’t know if this is our Henry or a different one as of yet?…

his brother Louis also located in Hazelwood.

“Message reply to a query on Rootsweb Message Board”

1.   There was a Brubaker
that lived near my family in Carlton, WA, in the ’30s and 40’s when my dad was
a kid. My dad said he was single and always lived alone.

2.   I’m sure this is the
same guy my dad knew as a kid. I remember my dad saying he liked a little wine
now and then and that he had a big telescope that my dad and his brother would
take out on the porch when they were kids and watch mule deer herds on the
other side of the valley during the fall hunting season. My Dad’s father knew
him very well. Do you know what he did for a living? The house he lived in was
torn down about 20 years ago, and we still hunt in the same area where he
lived.  My Dad always talks about him
when we drive by the place where he lives. My Dad did say they always called
him Bill.

—————-e-mail from March 25, 2002

From Ed McConnell

The road to Bill’s old place is about 1/2 way between Carlton and
Twisp is on the highway and is near a big concrete water weir. On the face of the
weir is my name faded out slightly.  Bill
and my grandfather were good friends and built the road together. Take the
dirt road near that up the hill to the two gates, stop your car at the
gates, and walk through the gate that is on the right.  Just beyond that gate, about 75 yards, look to
your left, and you will see where someone has put up a couple of
buildings.  The house Bill had sat at
that location looking across the valley.
It was a small wood frame house with a porch on it and was standing
until about 20 years ago when a forest fire went through the area.  I’m not sure if the Forest Service burned the
house down or if the Forest Fire burned it down.   WATCH For RATTLESNAKES.  You can walk right over a snake in that
country and not know it.  They don’t always
rattle.

After a few more contacts with Ed McConnell, he gave me a Stanley
and Arthur Darwood of Twisp Washington to contact (509-997-5173). Stanley and Arthur would go out to visit when
their father would go to see Bill.

Arthur told me that Bill was about 5 foot 11 inches and weight
about 180 pounds if his memory serves him correctly.   Bill was a Dry Land Farmer (no
irrigation). He raised Oats, Rye and
Wheat.  He had a few horses and cattle, and he would sell the cream to make ends meet.  His house was small. It was a two-story house,
Pantry, Living area, and Kitchen downstairs and a bedroom upstairs.   He had an old milk house and a cellar out
back where he would keep his potatoes.  He
really enjoyed sitting on the front porch in his homemade chair, just watching
the hills and the sunsets.   All that he
had around his land were timbers and hills.
There were a lot of rattlesnakes in his area, so when the kids would
come, he watched to see that they could get in and out with no problem.   He is remembered as being a good man,  a gentleman,
always willing to help his neighbors, who helped him in return.

Sheridan, Ohio; d. August 1943, Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa; m. MYRTLE
EDITH PETTIBONE, November 12, 1895, Marion, Iowa; b. May 31, 1876, North
English, Iowa County, Iowa; d. December 18, 1964, Des Moines, , Iowa.

Notes for DAVID CURTIS BRUBAKER:

David and Myrtle spent a large share of their life moving across
the county side. If you notice their children’s birthplaces, they moved to Iowa,
Virginia, Ohio, and finally back to Iowa, where they finally settled for good.

David and Myrtle met while both were attending College in West
Virginia or Virginia.   David studies to
be a teacher.  However, we are unsure as
to what happened to his ambitions.  David
worked as a plumber in North English and later moved to a farm 5 miles north of
North English.  David lost the farm after
a series of flood-stricken years and moved to Grinnell, still working as a
plumber.  Recollection is it was for
Ritter Hardware and later for Grinnell College.

David was diagnosed with Cancer and was hospitalized in Iowa
City.

Notes for MYRTLE EDITH PETTIBONE:

Edith, as most refer to her, her father committed suicide when she was
young, and her mother died during childbirth.
Her Aunt & Uncle, Frank & Elly Warner, took her in and raised
her.  Although she felt that she had to
work harder than her cousins who were all boys, they did send her to college
in West Virginia or Virginia,  and this
is where she met David Curtis Brubaker.
Frank & Elly Warner lived on a farm east of North English and kept in
close contact with Edith and her family.

SPECIAL MEMORIES OF PAM BRUBAKER MCGERR:  I remember going to my great grandma’s home all
of the time when I was really young. She
was always wearing her apron and seemed to know I was coming because she always
had freshly baked cookies waiting for me.
Her white/gray hair was all wrapped up in a small bun on the top of her
head.   I remember climbing up on her lap
at a table in the center of the kitchen to eat my cookies………..    I don’t remember ever seeing David Curtis
there, but I remember feeling at ease there.
There was a small timber that ran along the gravel road by the house. We used to go mushroom hunting there.

is listed as 23 years old.

In my communications with Dan Shute of Southpoint, Ohio, he makes
reference to David Todd’s granddaughter, maiden name Winters………   One of Sophia and Charles’s children is still
living in the area.  She is Mrs. Ennis Austin,
I just received a call today to confirm this information.  It is her. She lives in Lower Sheridan, right
a crossed the street from the old Brubaker home.  It is located on Todd acres to this day,
along the river.   The cemetery is right
there to cross the railroad tracts of the NW Railroad line, which runs
through the area.  During my conversation
about Sophia, she mentioned that Sophia’s first Child was born in Washington
State, where she and Charles lived for ten years.

Notes for CHARLES HENRY WINTERS:

Charles H. Winters was discharged from the war because of a
disability.  His death certificate shows
his occupation as being a farmer, cause of death was Sunstroke.

Ironton, Ohio, as they had settled out the records and sent him a sum of
$3455.81.  They charged him $100.00 for
their services.  At the time he received the
letter on May 7, 1928, he was still living in South Point, Ohio.  Somewhere in Louis’s life, he joined his
brother William in Washington.  Where he
spent several years there.

SPECIAL MEMORIES OF Mrs.
Ennis Austin — Lower Sheridan — She remembers when she was quite
young, Louis gave her a dime. At that point in time, they had a Cresci store in
the area.  With that dime, she purchased a
RED BARRETT.  She remembers feeling as if
she had a pot of gold.

SPECIAL MEMORIES OF Leroy Brubaker (being rather young) at the
time he remembers, as well as Pauline (being a teenager), remembers that Uncle
Louis lived with the family.   She
remembers it being Louis because she was getting ready to graduate from High
School, and he gave her a wonderful gift for graduation,  A BEAUTIFUL HOPE CHEST.
