She was born August 12, 1921 in Lawrence County, Ohio, the daughter of Austin and Jessie (Ellcessor) Burcham. She retired from Schaffer’s Bakery after 20 years of service. She was a member of St. Teresa Church. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Paul J.; son, David of Springfield and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Lapp. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Conroy Funeral Home. Funeral service will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, by the Rev. Ed Hood. Burial will be in Mays Chapel Cemetery, Lavalette. Eula was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Delbert and Pinkie Elkins Ray. She was a member of the Mays Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death her husband, Joseph M. Madden, five sisters and one brother. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and Sherrell Smith, Brenda and Phillip Perdue all of Huntington, Judy Larson of Virginia Beach, Va.; one son, Gary Madden of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother Frank Ray of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Joseph was born February 25, 1914, in Lincoln County, West Virginia, a son of the late Archibald and Clara Jones Madden. He was retired from Conner Steel and a member of the Mays United Methodist Church. Mader Herbert L 1959 Ironton Tribune – (Tuesday, December 22, 1959) Herbert L. Mader, 42, of 811 Wyanoke, died suddenly at his home Monday night at 11, while preparing to go to work at the Henrite Products Corp. Mr. Mader had been an employee there for 20 years. The deceased was born here June 15, 1917, a son of the late Charles and Florence Johnson Mader. On October 11, 1940, he was united in marriage to Leona Broughton. Mr. Mader was a veteran of World War II and saw overseas service in Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was a member of the UCT Council here, Deering Grange and was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include his wife; one son, Herbert L. Mader, Jr., a senior at Ironton High School; two brothers, Emerson of Coal Grove and Harold, with the US Army in Germany. Several brothers and sisters preceded him in death. The body is at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home. Arrangements are incomplete pending word from this brother in Germany. Mahan Melvin E 1961 Ironton Tribune – (Thursday, March 9, 1961) Melvin (Mel) Mahan Mr. Mahan, 93, died at 11:45 pm Tuesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hasenauer, after a lingering illness. He was born in Gallia County, November 4, 1869, a son of the late John and Nancy Sutton Mahan. He was united in marriage in 1897 to Luella Massey, who preceded him in death in 1930. They resided on a farm in Mason Township all their lives. He had been living with his daughter for the past several years. Surviving are a son, John Mahan of Arabia; three daughters, Mrs. Nancy Roach of Waterloo, Mrs. Minta Shepherd of Hazel Park, Mich., and Mrs. Mahan of Ironton; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Nora Edler of Yellow Springs, Ohio; and a brother, Enoch Mahan of Patriot, Ohio. Funeral services will be Saturday at 3 pm in Fox Fairview Church near Waterloo. Rev. Raymond Dillon will officiate, with burial in Fox Fairview Cemetery. Mahone Carl 1980 Ironton Tribune – (Monday, June 16, 1980) Carl Mahone, 66, of 749 Rockwood Ave., Chesapeake, died unexpectedly this morning at his residence. Born April 26, 1914 in Mingo County, W.Va., he was a retired employee of Houdaille Industries in Huntington. Mr. Mahone was a member of the Rockwood Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school. Survivors include: his wife, Violet McComas Mahone; one sister, Mrs. Sylvia Ellcessor of Gahanna, Ohio; and three brothers, Arthur, Thurmond and Lon Mahone, Jr., all of Columbus. LOUISE REYNOLDS WELLS MANNON, 77, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009, to go home to be with the Lord. She was a member of the former 25th Street Pentecostal Church, currently New Beginning Apostolic Church, for 52 years. She was a Sunday school teacher for 24 years and Ladies Auxiliary President for 10 years. She was a coordinator for church-affiliated banquets, dinners, pastor appreciation services, fundraisers, and acted as the church wedding planner for numerous years. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 46 years, Bennie Odell Mannon; her eldest daughter Mrs. Lois Chapman of Morgantown, W.Va., daughter Ahlena Meadows, son Herbert (Pudge) Wells, daughter Katrina Anderson, and daughter-in-law Madge Wells, all of Huntington, and son-in-law Mike Chapman of Morgantown. Her brothers, Bill Reynolds of Huntington and James Reynolds of Athens, Ala., also survive. She was preceded in death by a sister, Freda Hay of Huntington and a brother, Ed Reynolds of Toledo, Ohio, a great-grandson Jayden Cooper of Huntington, and a son-in-law, Leon Meadows of Huntington. She has 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great- great-grandson. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and a host of close friends. Visitation will be held at the New Beginning Apostolic Church from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2009, and the funeral services at 1 p.m. the following day, officiated by Bishop Norman Mills, son-in-law, Rev. Michael Chapman, brother, Rev. James Reynolds, and Pastor T.D. Mills. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, W.Va. She was a shining example of godliness. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Copley and Bessie Murdock; and for brothers, William, Perry, John L. and Carl Mannon. Markins Alton R 2009 Huntington Herald Dispatch – (Saturday, Jan 08, 2009) ALTON R. MARKINS, 82, of Ironton, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Russell, Ky. The Lawrence County, Ohio, native was born November 22, 1926, the son of the late George W. and Lillian Mays Markins. He is survived by his wife, Maxine M. Addis Markins, whom he married August 29, 1948. Mr. Markins was a very loving husband and father, dedicated to his family. He was a 1944 graduate of Pedro High School and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a former senior lab analyst with Marquette/Lone Star Cement Company for 44 years, retiring in 1988. Mr. Markins has been a very active member of Central Christian Church since he joined in 1956. He was a deacon and a member of the church board and former trustee. He was a faithful Food Pantry volunteer, a member of the 3 Score and More and the 50/50 Sunday School class. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion and a former AARP volunteer. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds, Ohio State Buckeyes and Ironton Tigers fan, and loved gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Massie and Imogene Large and four brothers, William “Wid” Markins, Alex Markins, George R. Markins and Harry Edward Markins. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, George and Cheryl Markins of Lexington, Ky., Jeff and Jan Markins of Chillicothe, Ohio and Eddie Markins of Ironton; seven grandchildren, Shanna Loewen of Overland Park, Kan., Kelley Hodges of Plainview, Texas, Farrah Folson and Shayne Pearce, both of Lexington, Ky., Adam Markins and Andrea Markins, both of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Lathan Markins of Ironton; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marguerite Lehrke and Juanita Brunner, both of Fairborn, Ohio. (Mays) Markins, 81, of 614 Railroad St., died at 12:30 AM today at Lawrence County General Hospital. She had been seriously ill for the past two months. Mrs. Markins was born at Kitts Hill, daughter of the late John and Molly Willis Mays. She was reared in the Kitts Hill and Superior areas. Her husband, George W. Markins, Sr., preceded her in death in 1956. During their married life they resided at Hecla. She had been living in Ironton for the past 10 years. Mrs. Markins was a member of Central Christian Church and the Loyal Friends Class of the church. The Wayne County, W.Va., native was born June 21, 1916, a son of the late Eugene and Helen Ross Marshall. He was the husband of Darlene Scarberry Marshall, who survives. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Altizer, W.Va. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Sandra Marshall of Benson, N.C.; two step daughters and a son-in-law, Helena and Ike Burge and Brenda Ferguson, all of Proctorville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Charles and Barbara Scarberry of Proctorville; 16 stepchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herschel Roach, who died in 1951; her second husband, Albert Mash; one daughter, Helen Taylor; and a stepson, Herbert Mash. Massey Clarence G Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, March 17, 1974) Clarence G. (Red) Massey, 53, of 380 N. Walnut St., Wood Dale, Ill., formerly of Ironton, was found dead Friday morning at the Holiday Inn in Philadelphia, Pa. Mr. Massey, who was employed with the US Government, was on business trip when stricken with an apparent heart attack. He was born of Pedro, Ohio, and attended Ironton schools, graduating from Ironton High School in 1938. In 1943 he received a Degree in Civil Engineering from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Massey was employed as a construction management engineer for General Service Administration of the US Government working out of the Chicago office. They son of Mrs. Clara Dillon Massey of Ironton and the late Clarence Gaines Massey, Sr., served with the US Marines during World War II and was a Naval veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Garb Baptist Church of Wood Dale. Surviving in addition to his mother are the widow, Alice Adkins Massey, whom he married June 26, 1948 in Huntington; three children, Scott, Diane and Shelby, all it home; a sister, Mrs. Maxine Terry of Ironton; a brother, John Massey of Tillamook, Ore.; three nieces; and three nephews. Wells Moses Massie, an old soldier who lived near Ohio Furnace, just this side of the line between Lawrence and Scioto counties, was found dead in his bed last Thursday.He was up and about Wednesday and was apparently enjoying his usual health upon retiring Wednesday night. Mr. Massie was 60 years of age and leaves a wife and family. He was a member of Co. F, 173d O.V.I. during the war. Saturday, Coroner Ellison and Mr. J. W. Lowry held a post mortem over the remains. The coroner has rendered a verdict that the death of the deceased was due to a rupture of the heart. |

She was a homemaker and lived 14 years in New Jersey but spent the rest of her life in Lawrence County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by; daughter, Ella Jean Racer; grandson, Dana Racer; four brothers, Clarence, Wayne, Virtle and Albert Freeman; and three sisters, Emily Coomer, Dorothy Stanley and Bessie Jordan. McClure George C McClure, 72, Rt. 2, Pedro, died this morning at Lawrence County General Hospital after failing health for the past two years. He was born August 28, 1911 in Kentucky, son of Thomas S. and Alcia Moore McClure. He spent his early life in Kentucky and moved to Forestdale in 1941. He presently lived on Aarons Creek where he operated the Palomino Ranch since 1947. He was a retired crane operator at Armco Steel. He attended Myrtle Tree Missionary Baptist Church. He was formally the president of the Lawrence County Saddle Club and a member of the Paco-Fino Horse Association. In 1939 he married Stella June Click who preceded him in death in October of 1982. He is survived by three daughters, Doreata McKinnon of Columbus, Ga., Alcia Graham of Proctorville and Julia Smith of Columbus; three sons, Thomas S. McClure of Kitts Hill, George C. McClure, Jr. of Wheelersburg and Robert McClure of Springfield; 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and one sister, Julia Fields of West Liberty, Ky. McCoy Everette W 1991 Springfield New Sun – (Friday, July 26, 1991) Everette William McCoy, 78, of 4834 Tory Road, died at 2:30 AM July 25, 1991, in his residence after a long illness. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, March 8, 1913, the son of Grace (Williams) and Blane McCoy. He was a former member of the American Motorcycle Association, Springfield, Ohio unit. He served three and a half years in the Army during World War II as a corporal in the 741st Tank Battalion. He helped his unit win a ‘Distinguished Unit Citation’. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Mullett; four sisters, Alberta Taylor of Athens, Ohio., Beatrice Stultz and Donna Headley, both of Phoenix, Arizona and Freda Nichols, of Pomeroy, Ohio; an aunt, Dorothy McFarland of Springfield; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann Baugh; a sister, Evelyn Covington; and his mother and stepfather, Grace and Fred Bennington. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home with Pastor D.L. Webb and Pastor Dale Barnett officiating. Marie was born March 26, 1921, in Kitts Hill, Ohio, a daughter of the late Russell and Jennie Howard Chinn. She lived her entire life in Lawrence County, Ohio. On a cold winter night in the month of February 1937, she gave her heart to the Lord. She joined Leatherwood Baptist Church and remained a member there until 1990, when she moved her membership to Sybene Missionary Baptist Church, where she served the Lord until her passing. She was united in marriage on Oct. 25, 1940, with Warren H. McGuire, and three children were born into that union. Warren preceded her in death in 1973, leaving Marie and the following children, Warren Steven McGuire of Jupiter, Fla., Kenneth Ray McGuire of Huntington, W.Va., and Lawana Kay Edwards of Ironton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Josephine Wilson and one brother, Russell Lowell Chinn. Surviving is one sister, Eva Spears of Coal Grove, Ohio. Marie was a humble person, but she had many friends who loved her and will be sadly missed by her family, church brothers and sisters and a host of friends. Melvin, 58, of Kitts Hill, prominent educator, died suddenly this morning while vacationing in Albuquerque, N.M. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He was born in Lawrence County, a son of the late George and Mary Martin Melvin. Dr. Melvin taught in the county schools and for many years has been a professor at Ashland Branch, University of Kentucky, Ashland. He graduated from Ohio University and Colorado State College. He was a veteran of World War I. Surviving are the wife, Racie; two daughters, Mrs. Albert (Frances) Limerick of Cincinnati and Mrs. Barbara Martin of Albuquerque; a son, John Melvin of Albuquerque and three brothers, Homer and Oakley Melvin of Deering and George Melvin of Yale, Mich. Melvin William S 1954 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, May 23, 1954) William Melvin William Sherman Melvin, 89, well known Lawrence County resident, died Friday at 10 pm at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Harrison Prichard, 2803 South Six Street. He had been in failing health several years but had been seriously ill for the last two weeks. He was born in Lawrence County, March 31, 1865, son of the late John and Rhoda Gore Melvin. He was engaged in farming until poor health forced him to retire several years ago. Mr. Melvin was a lifelong member of the Johnstown Baptist Church. On April 26, 1884, he was married to Rachel Copley. Mrs. Melvin preceded him in death on July 11, 1952. He was the last surviving member of his family. Surviving are eight children, Marion Melvin of Ironton Route 1, Mrs. Harrison (Ella) Prichard of Ironton, Mrs. Chester (Olive) Rouse of Ironton Route 1, Mrs. Miles (Ethel) Bowman of Coal Grove, Walter Melvin of Coal Grove, Mrs. M.E. (Elizabeth) Tucker of Brighton, Mass., and Mrs. J.S. (Evangeline) Maxey of Worthington, Ohio; 29 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at Johnstown Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Malone officiating. Burial will be in Melvin Cemetery. Middleton Doreen Stumbo 1994 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, March 13, 1994) M. Doreen Middleton January 21, 1923 – March 12, 1995 M. Doreen Middleton, 72, of Ironton, died Sunday at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis, after an extended illness. The Ironton native was born January 21, 1923, the daughter of the late James F. Stumbo and Inez P. Gore Stumbo. She was wife, James L. Middleton, who survives. She retired from Ironton City Schools, and was a 45 year member of Central Christian Church of Ironton, where she was involved in the Adult Choir and worked with the food pantry ministry. She lived all her life in Lawrence County and was a member of the Lawrence Chapter No. 437 Order of Eastern Star in Ironton. She was an advisor of the Lucky Stars 4H Club for 10 years, was a 1991, Ironton Tribune ‘Unsung Hero’, and was a Girl Scout Leader at Central Christian Church in the 1960s. She was an advocate for better treatment of the mentally handicapped as a member of the Citizens Advisory Board of Gallipolis Developmental Center, vice president and past president of the Parents Volunteer Association in Gallipolis and a trustee of Middleton Estates, established in 1982 as a four building complex for the housing of mentally handicapped senior citizens. She was instrumental in establishing the Open Door School in Lawrence County in the early 1960s, and was a charter board member. In 1984 she was awarded ‘Mother at the Year’ by Governor. Celeste for her work as a volunteer with the rights of the mentally retarded. Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters and a son-in-law, Carla Middleton of Gallipolis and Mary Lee and Robert Kennedy of Ironton; and three grandchildren, Mary Ann Kennedy, Sara Kennedy and Emily (E.J.) Kennedy, all of Ironton. She was preceded in death by one brother, James M. Stumbo. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central Christian Church, Seventh and Ellison streets, with the ministers Larry McAdams and Brent Baker officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Miller Lena Walke 2008 Springfield Ohio Newspaper – (Thursday, April 17, 2008) Lena C. “Le” Miller (b. 6 July 1921, d. 16 April 2008) – Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, artist, and teacher, the fabulous Le Miller died on Wednesday at Hospice of Dayton owing to renal failure and complications from a fall. She was preceded in death by her first husband (Emerson Studebaker) and by her second (Charles E. “Tut” Miller, Sr.); by her first son, Ted Studebaker; by a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Ann Mosier Miller; by six sisters and two brothers; and by four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Survived by her daughter, Marilynn Lee Studebaker Barr (Richard) of Kettering; by her second son, Charles E. (“Butch”) Miller, Jr., of Burke, Virginia; by daughters-in-spirit, Fran Thaman of Huber Heights and Dee Monjot, of Springfield; by a sister, Sylvia Emmons Boots and a brother-in-law, Tom Miller, both of Kettering; and by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Le was a signature member of the International Water Color Society; photos of her award-winning artwork are on file at the Library of Congress. For nearly a quarter of a century, she taught basic art technique and multimedia at the Springfield Art Center, as well as at Riverbend in North Dayton and at Rosewood in Kettering. She was loved by all who knew her and admired by all who saw her; her art, which reflects the beauty of her soul and of the world she saw, will be prized by millions who never did. Mr. Miller was born in Nashville, Tenn., July 13, 1881, a son of the late Green and Emma Reeves Miller. He spent his early life in Nashville and was united in marriage to Mattie Haynes in 1910. They moved to Ironton in 1913. When he first came here to reside, Mr. Miller was a molder at Foster Stove Plant. Later he entered the grocery and meat business at Third and Kemp and the business was later moved to the downtown section. He retired 10 years ago. The deceased was a member of First Baptists Church, and Masonic Lodge No. 198. He was a veteran of the Spanish American war. Surviving, in addition to the widow, are three children; Dr. Thomas Miller of Ironton, Miss Martha Miller, a teacher in the Ironton schools and Dr. Leslie Miller, a professor at Ohio State University, Columbus. Two sisters and the following brothers; Mrs. Louise Bryant and Mrs. Bessie Cox of Nashville, William of Detroit, George and James of Nashville, Dr. Edwin Miller of Flint, Mich., Dr. John Miller of Indianapolis and Ray Miller of Modesto, Calif., also survive. In 1903 he was united in marriage to Helena Corn, who survives. Born May 16, 1924 in Crown City, he was the son of the late Seldon L. and Ora (Brammer) Moore. He was a retired from Kaiser Aluminum in 1984. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of Chapel Hill Church of Christ, Gallipolis. Surviving is his wife, Vivian (Wallace) Moore, whom he married October 19, 1946 in Gallipolis. Also surviving are three sons, Michael Moore of Palm Beach, Fla., Stephan Moore of Owensboro, Ky., and Rick Moore of Gallipolis; one daughter, Susan Moore of Gallipolis; seven grandchildren; one brother, Fred Moore of Cheshire, Ohio; and two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Campbell and Mrs. June Mulhall, both of Honolulu, Hawaii. She had been in failing health several months. She was born August 18, 1896, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Nannie Booth Brammer. She married Sheldon Moore in May, 1914. He preceded her in death June 30, 1969. The following children survived: Ona Lee of Gallipolis, Fred of Cheshire; Mrs. Vance (Thelma) Campbell of Lompoc, Calif.; Mrs. Lyle (June) Lumlhall of Honolulu, Hawaii; and two daughters and one son died infancy; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive. One grandson preceded her in death. Murnahan of 2530 at South Ninth Street, died at 7:45 p.m. Friday at the Lawrence County General Hospital. Mr. Murnahan was born Dec. 18, 1880, a son of the late John and Matilda Short Murnahan. He retired from Standard Slag Company in 1952. He spent his entire life in this county and was a charter member of the Bald Knob United Methodist Church. In 1902, he was united in marriage to Eliza Dickess, whose survives. In addition to the wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Ruth) Birch of Ironton, Mrs. John (Eliza) Wineka of Ironton and five sons, William of Sugar Creek, Clarence of Kitts Hill, Ted of Pedro, Charles of Deering and Benny of Portsmouth. Thirty grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild also survives. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. He was born June 4, 1928, in Ironton, the son of Clarence C. Murnahan of Kitts Hill and the late Edith Broce Murnahan. He was raised in Kitts Hill and graduated from Coal Grove High School, class of 1946. He attended Cedarville and Rio Grande Colleges. From 1948-1950 he taught school at Black Fork and then became the Shipping Superintendent for the Carlyle Tile Co. He attended Woodland Chapel Baptist Church and was a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society. He was a member of the Rock Hill Band Booster Club and served as score keeper and statistician at Rock Hill for 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Vera Sanders, whom he married Oct. 8, 1948; two daughter, Mrs. Kent (Beckey) Sanborn and Mrs. Lacy (Ginger) Dalton, both of Rt. 3, Ironton; four brothers, Earl ‘Ike’ Murnahan, Don Murnahan, Wendell Murnahan, all of Kitts Hill, and Walter ‘Puck’ Murnahan of Gainesville, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Elinor) Morgan of Kitt Hill and Mrs. Benny (Jenny) Williamson on Xenia. Mr. Murnahan was born February 25, 1930, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late William ‘Roundy’ and Lena Marie Walker Murnahan. He was retired from Ashland Inc. as an electronics technician with 39 years of service. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a graduate of Ironton High School and an Air Force veteran. Surviving are his wife, Sheila Ann Rowsey Murnahan; four daughters, Amy Dowdy of Greenup, Patrice Meade of Jenkins, Paula McPhee of Kingston, Mo., and Zane Ellen Hall of Atlanta, Ga.; a son Frank Murnahan Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepson, Mark A. McDowell of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three brothers, William Murnahan Jr. and Bobby Murnahan, both of Ironton, and Paul Murnahan of Ashland, Ky.; three sisters, Mary Haas and Brenda Eaches, both of Ironton, Margaret Lyons and Hilda Cordial, both of Ashland, Sue Corbin of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Rita Shelton of Baton Rouge, La.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 3 PM Thursday at Hayes-Philips Funeral Home in Ironton by the Rev. John Schroll. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Murnahan, 73 years died in General Hospital this morning at 9:30 o’clock following an illness of a few days. He was a resident of New Castle, Ironton Rt. 2 and was born in Hamilton Township. The Lawrence County, Ohio, native was born Aug. 16, 1929, daughter of the late Robert and Bertha Wills Sanders. Mrs. Murnahan was a retired school teacher for the Rock Hill School District. She was a 50 year charter member of the Rock Hill Athletic Booster Club, charter member of the Rock Hill Garden Club, member of the Kitts Hill Homemakers, the Lawrence County Genealogical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also was a member of the Woodland Chapel Church and she graduated from Pedro High School and attended Rio Grande College. Vera was a descendant of the First Families of Ohio and Lawrence County. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Carl “Teen’ Murnahan on Oct. 6, 1989; two brothers, Lovell Sanders and Aaron Sanders; and one sister; Evelyne Rowe.
