Langdon Bertha Earles and Lewis Langdon 1944 IRONTON TRIBUNE – (Wednesday, December 6, 1944) ELDERLY COUPLE, LAST SEEN FRIDAY, FOUND SUFFOCATED IN CHESAPEAKE ROOMING HOUSE  Pets, dog and cat unharmed by gas fumes   The bodies of an elderly couple who had not been seen since last Friday night were found in a Chesapeake running home yesterday, but their pet dog and cat walked out of the room apparently unharmed by be fumes and intense heat from a two burner stove which had suffocated their master and mistress. Coroner W. W. Lynd identified the victims as Lewis Langdon, 67 and his wife, Bertha, 62, who lived in one room of the home of Mrs. Nellie Wease of State Route 52. Marshall Ran Smith of Chesapeake said a couple apparently had been dead since late Friday night or early Saturday morning. They were last seen at 10 p.m. Friday. Dr. Lynd said one burner of a hot plate was turned on full, while the other was burning only partially. Heat and fumes from the stove killed the Langdon’s, who apparently had lighted it against the cold slap which sent the temperature down to 20 degrees Saturday night, he added. “They’re fuzzy faced little white dog and yellow cat walked right out of the room,” said Marshall Smith. It was believed the animals survived because they were close to the floor where the heat and fumes were least intense. The Langdons had had the pets for about a year, it was reported. The bodies were discovered after a newsboy knocked on the door to deliver a paper and heard the dog bark, Marshall Smith reported. After the newsboy obtained no answer, another person looked through an outside window and saw Mr. Langdon’s body on the floor. His wife’s body was found on the bed after Marshal Smith had been summoned and pried the door open. Dr. Lynd says Mr. Langdon apparently had started for the door to open it, but was overcome. The fact that the Langdons had not been seen since Friday night had caused no alarm, Marshall Smith said, because they usually came and went by a rear door at the rooming house. Mrs. Langdon was employed in Huntington. Joint funeral services were conducted at the graveside in the Langdon Cemetery near Chesapeake today at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. S. J. Dillon. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Eustace Hay of Huntington and Mrs. Hobert Snyder of Chesapeake, and one son Roscoe Langdon of Huntington.
