These obituaries are persons associated with descendants of the Lawrence County, Ohio Hardesty/Lake Atlas family trees and were typed exactly as they were first published in the newspapers. Most of the newspapers are from Ironton, Ohio, Huntington, WV, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Point Pleasant, WV. Even though this is not a complete list, it is important material for the genealogist.
Gallagher Francis Wilson 1988 Ironton Tribune – (Thursday, September 29, 1988) Francis W. Gallagher, 82, of Ironton, died this morning at Lawrence County Medical Center, after an extended illness. She was born September 30, 1905, in Atlanta, Ga., daughter of the late James and Rosemary Kloeckler Wilson. She was a member of St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Catholic Women’s Club, Child Welfare Club, St. Lawrence Choir and Legion of Mary. She was a graduate of Ironton High School and attended the College of St. Theresa of Winona, Minn. Survivors include two daughters, Dr. and Mrs. Charles (J. Eileen Gallagher) Haugh of Winona, (Minn.) and Dr. Matthew (Mary G.) Tooth of Auburn, Mass.; one brother, Walter Wilson of Ironton; three sisters, Mary Kautz, Rose Mahoney and Helen Moran, all of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence J. Gallagher; one brother; and one sister. Arrangements are pending at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home. Galloway Charles F 1986 IRONTON TRIBUNE – Friday, October 17, 1986 Charles Fred Galloway, 98, of Proctorville, died Wednesday in Lawrence County General Hospital. He was born Jan. 23, 1888, in Lawrence County, son of the late John and Mary Lewis Galloway. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Rome Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife Meda Callicoat Galloway. Survivors include two brothers, Forest Galloway of Proctorville and Norman Galloway of Huntington, W.Va.; one sister, Myrtle Johnson of Huntington, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday, 1 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville by Minister Bill Rhodes. Burial will be in New Zion Cemetery. Galloway Meda Callicoat 1980 Ironton Tribune – (Friday, October 03, 1980) Mrs. Meda Callicoat Galloway, 86, of Route 3, Proctorville, died Thursday in the Pulley Care Center at South Point. She was born October 22, 1893 in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late George W. and Anna Dillon Callicoat. She was a former teacher in Lawrence County schools and was a member of the Rome Church of Christ. On February 25, 1914, she was married at Rappsburg, Ohio to Fred Galloway, who survives. Also surviving are a brother, Owen Callicoat of South Point; seven nieces; two nephews, several great-nieces and nephews and cousins; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Nannie Callicoat Stumbo and a brother, Ogle Callicoat. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Rome Church of Christ by Minister Robert McCready. Burial will be in New Zion Cemetery. Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 PM Wednesday, December 9, 1992, at the Ferrell Mortuary Chapel with Minister Jerry Cline officiating. Burial will be in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, W.Va. He was born October 15, 1905, in Lawrence County, Ohio, a son of the late John T. and Mary Lewis Galloway. He retired with 30 years of service with the C & O Railroad. He was a member of the Norway Ave. Church of Christ, Huntington, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his six brothers. Survivors include his wife, Corinne Mays Galloway; one son, Glenn R. Galloway of Waverly, Ohio; one sister, Myrtle Johnson of Huntington, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Vickie Himmelman, Laura J. Galvin Hazel Butler 1973 Ironton Tribune – (Tuesday, March 27, 1973) Mrs. Patrick Galvin Mrs. Hazel Ella Galvin, 73, of 1915 S. Second St. died at 1:45 pm Monday at Lawrence County General Hospital after an illness of five years. Born in Lawrence County, she was a daughter of the late John and Ella Cecil Butler. Her husband, Patrick Galvin, died in August 1964. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Mrs. Galvin was employed with Wilson Athletic Goods Mfg. Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1964. Surviving are one son, Donald of Route 1; four daughters, Mrs. Georgeanna Goodall, Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Morgan, Mrs. Jack (Kathleen) Lawless of Ironton, Mrs. Paul (Rosalie) Pyles of Newark, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Butler and one sister, Mrs. Alice Carman, both of Ironton. Gannon Lorene Faverty 2008 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, March 02, 2008) LORENE M. GANNON, 101, of South Point, Ohio, went to be with the Lord, Friday, February 29, 2008, at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2008, at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home with Pastor Aaron Childers officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Burlington, Ohio. Lorene was born March 21, 1906, a daughter of the late James Theodore and Mattie Catherine Kates Faverty. She was a lifetime member of Solida Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and a ladies quartet for many years, a member of the Living Hope class and a member of Lawrence Manor Bible Study at the Lawrence Manor, where she spent 19 years of her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cummins Gannon; one son, Manuel Gannon; two brothers, Walter and Erchel Faverty; a grandson, Richard Gannon; and an infant grandson. Lorene is survived by three daughters, Katherine Traveny of Akron, Ohio, Marilyn Manthe and Elizabeth Harshbarger, both of Kernersville, N.C.; one son, Donald Galen Gannon and his wife, Janet, of South Point, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Helen Gannon of Akron, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren. Garrison Ralph 1983 Anderson Herald Bulletin – Tuesday, March 1983 Yorktown – Ralph N. Garrison, 72, formerly Yorktown, died unexpectedly Monday morning at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. He was born in Anderson and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He moved to Yorktown in 1937, where he owned and operated Garrison’s Restaurant for several years. He also served as Fire Chief of the Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department. He moved to Angola in 1948. He was employed as manager of the Angola Moose Lodge and manager of Lake James Country Club. He was associated with the Klink Funeral home in Angola, retiring in 1982. He was a charter member of Angola Kiwanis Club and a member of the Angola American Legion Post. He is survived by his wife, Edith; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jean Shepard of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Veatch of Anderson; a half-sister, Mrs. Bernice Cooper of Anderson; and five grandchildren. Geswein Elsie Freeman 1988 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, October 23, 1988) Elsie P. Geswein, 87, of 2006 S. Fourth St., Ironton, died Friday in Lawrence County Medical Center. She was born August 2, 1901, in Ironton, the daughter of the late Thomas and Anna Carlsburger Freeman. She attended Ironton Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Geswein, who died in November 1985; two sons, Jack Geswein and Alden Geswein; and four sisters, Elizabeth Benge, Bess Dudley, Lucille Minor and Ann Edwards. Survivors include two daughters, Connie Lanham on Sebastian, Fla., and Mrs. David J. (Leah) Davis of Ironton; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Dottie Geswein of Ironton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Geswein Frederick W 1966 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, April 24, 1966) Frederick W. (Fred) Geswein, 76, a retired C&O Railroad employee, died suddenly Saturday morning at his residence at 506 N. 7th St. Mr. Geswein, a lifetime residence of Lawrence County, retired 10 years ago as an electrician with the C&O Railway Co. He was born in Lawrence County on April 16, 1890, a son of the late John and Mary Ann Kleinman Geswein. A veteran of World War I was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife, Anna E. Cannon Geswein; one son, Carl J. Geswein of Ironton; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Marie) Whaley and Mrs. Fred (Roberta) Colbertson, both of Ironton; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Albert Cannon and Miss Leona Geswein of Ironton; two brothers, Walter and Henry Geswein of Ironton; and several nieces and nephews. Geswein Walter J 1985 Ironton Tribune – (Friday, November 8, 1985) Walter J. Geswein, 87, of 2906 S. Fourth St., Ironton, died Thursday at Lawrence County General Hospital. He was born June 3, 1898, in Lawrence County, the son of the late John and Mary Kleinman Geswein. He spent all his life in the Ironton area and attended St. Joseph High School. In 1963, he retired from Armco Steel with 40 years of service. He was known locally for his raising and selling of tropical birds. He was a member of St. Joseph Church and the Armco Retiree Club. Survivors include his wife, Elsie Freeman Geswein, whom he married in 1920; two daughters, Connie Lanham of Columbus and Mrs. David (Leah) Davis of Ironton; one son, Tom Geswein of Ironton; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one brother, Henry Geswein of Ironton. He was preceded in death by one son, Jack, who was killed during World War II, three brothers, three sisters, and one infant son. Gettys Harry A 1982 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, August 22, 1982) Harry A. Gettys, 74, of Rt. 1, Kitts Hill, died at 7:30 AM in Lawrence County General Hospital. He was born October 14, 1907 in Lawrence County, a son of the late James and Estea Pyles Gettys. He lived in Lawrence County all his life. He was a general foreman for the Henwright Company for 30 years and the last 11 years was a truck driver for the Lawrence County Highway Department. He was married to Faye Russell November 16, 1930. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jean Musgrave of Willow Wood; two sons, Keith Gettys of South Point and David Gettys at home; two sisters, Mrs. Harold (Ruth) Lipker and Georgia Lamson, both of the Lakewood, Ohio; one brother, Raymond Gettys of Ironton; mother and father-in-law, Jesse and Bertha Russell of Aide; and four grandchildren, Diana Gettys and Harry, Danny and John Musgrave. She was a graduate of Aid High School and Rio Grande Norma School. She lived all her life in Lawrence County. She was the widow of Harry Gettys, who died in 1982. She is survived by one son, David Gettys of Kitts Hill; one daughter-in-law, Doris Gettys of South Point; one granddaughter, Diana Gettys of South Point; Bill Musgrave of Willow Wood; and three grandsons, John Musgrave of South Point, Danny Musgrave of Cheshire and Harry Musgrave of Chesapeake. She retired in 1985, after working for 37 years at City Loan in Ironton, Ohio, and was a member of the Sunrise Church of the Nazarene, where she was very active with the youth. She was a graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and had lived most her life in Coal Grove, Ohio, area. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, DeeAnn and Ronald D. May of Ashland; five grandsons; one brother, Rob Potter of South Point Ohio; and five sisters, Dean Potter, Jessie G. Gibson Mary Adkins 1942 IRONTON TRIBUNE – (Monday, June 29, 1942) DEATH CLAIMS MARY GIBSON WAS OLDEST MEMBER OF SOUTH POINT BAPTIST CHURCH Mrs. Mary A. Gibson, a native and lifelong resident of Lawrence County, died this morning at 5:24 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Milem of South Point. The deceased had been in failing health for the past five years and had been bedfast since March. At be age of 14 she was united with the South Point Baptist Church but later transferred to the Ice Creek Baptist Church and at death she was the oldest member of that organization. A daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Miller Adkins the deceased had been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Milem at whose home she passed away. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. I M. Milem of Mansfield, Ohio, Mrs. M. P. Langdon of South Point and Mrs. Lizzie Milem of South Point; and one son, Millard Gibson of South Point. Twenty-six grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren also survive. One daughter, Mrs. Susie Corder, her husband, Frank B. Gibson, three brothers, John, Franklin and Joe and one sister, Mrs. Howard Hudson of Huntington, preceded her in death the latter dying December 30. No funeral arrangements have been announced although burial is to be made in Woodland cemetery under direction of Tracy Brammer. Glass Cecil E 2001 Columbus Dispatch – (Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001) Cecil E. Glass, 95, Friendship Village of Columbus, died Thursday, October 11, 2001 at St. Anne’s Hospital. He was born July a 1906 in Morgan County, son of the late Alfred H. and Florence Harrison Glass. He graduated from M&M High School and received a B.A. Degree from Ohio University in 1929. He began his business career at Malta National Bank, later going to McConnellsville Citizens Bank. He then became a partner with Ben Hammond in the Standard Supply Company in McConnellsville. They expanded the business to include stores in Chesterhill and Stockport, and the Chrysler-Plymouth Automobile Agency in McConnellsville. After selling the business, he moved to Columbus and became office manager with law firm of George, Greek, King, McMahon and McConnaughey. Upon his retirement he maintained an active interest in the resident’s business affairs at Friendship Village. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in McConnellsville and Central College Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his daughter, Julia A, ‘Judy’ Cumberland of Lancaster; grandsons, R. Miles (Debbie) Cumberland of Dublin and Jeffrey C. (Mary) Cumberland of Lancaster, two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Kelly Cumberland of Dublin; two step great-grandchildren and two step great-great-grandchildren in Lancaster; sisters, Juanita Glass (Charles) Fitch of McConnellsville and Ruth Glass (Russell) Moore of Malta. Glass Hilda Archer 1994 Columbus Dispatch – (Wednesday, Nov. 23, 1994) Hilda A. Glass, age 88, Friendship Village of Columbus, died November 21, 1994 at the health center. Born September 6, 1906 to Guy and Ora (Baily) Archer in Bashan, Ohio. She graduated from Racine High School at the age of 16 and received a B.A. Degree from Ohio University at age 20. She taught several years in the Athens County Schools until her marriage to Cecil E. Glass. During her residence in Morgan County, she belonged to the number of civic and social clubs in Malta and McConnellsville, many of which she served as president. An avid gardener, she raised a large variety of flowers, like the many species of daffodils, chrysanthemums and African violets. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and presently a member of Central College Presbytery Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother who drowned in the Hocking River at age 16, infant twins sisters and infant granddaughter. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Cecil E. Glass; daughter, Julia A. (Judy) Cumberland of Lancaster; grandsons, R. Miles (Debbie) Cumberland of Dublin and Jeffrey C. Betty Jo was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1946, where she served on various committees through the years. She was a volunteer at the Cabell County Library, assisting with the semi-annual book sales. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for many years. Survivors include two nieces, Janice (James) Blankenship of Florida, Frances (Leroy) Bennett of Athens, Ohio; two nephews, Michael (Lindy) Weller of Grayson, Ky., Joseph (Shirley) Weller of Washington; a step-daughter, Dorothy Gibson of California; several great-nephews and a great-niece. She was loved by her church family and very special longtime friends, Karen and Fred Alexander, Donna and Dennis Brumfield and Myrtle Mancini. Goodall David M 2008 Huntington Herald Dispatch – (Sunday, Sep 21, 2008) DAVID MICHAEL “MICKEY” GOODALL, 58, formerly of Huntington, W.Va., and Nashville, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2008, in Capitola, Calif. Mr. Goodall lived with his sister, Dottie Gibson, after suffering a stroke in 2005. A graduate of Huntington High School, he also attended Marshall University. A singer and songwriter, he performed as a solo artist and in several bands, including Willow Run and Yellow Rose, the latter of which performed with national acts including the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Pure Prairie League. Yellow Rose continued to perform at both Birchmere and Rocky Racoon Saloon in the Washington, D.C., area. In Nashville, he had served as a manager at the Stockyard, Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar, and B.B. King’s Blues Club. He was the son of the late Raymond L. and Pearl Williams Goodall of Huntington and was preceded in death by his brother Robert R. Goodall. In addition to his sister, he is survived by three nephews, Steve and Tom Gibson of California and Jason Goodall of Florida: one niece, Catherine Goodall Weems of Georgia and a stepmother, Betty Weller Goodall of Huntington. He also leaves two grandnieces, Megan and Willa Gibson, and a grand-nephew, Guy Gibson, all of California, and a host of loving family and friends. No formal services will be held. She was born November 18, 1949, in Portsmouth, Ohio, and lived in this area most of her life. She worked at the Gruenewald House in Anderson and was also a substitute teacher for Anderson Community Schools. She was a 1969 graduate of Anderson High School. She attended Foursquare Church in Anderson and was involved in many areas of the church. She loved to collect Santa Clauses and teapots. She loved to write poetry. She was the past PTO President and volunteer for Southside Middle School, volunteer for Red Cross, was Republican precinct committeewoman, active in the Madison Heights High School Band and Choir Boosters, volunteered at Westvale School, was a Brownie Leader and volunteered for the Child Team at the Center for Mental Health. She was an organ donor. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Goode, whom she married June 10, 1967, in Anderson; two sons, Tim (wife, Tracy) Goode and Tracy Goode and fiancée Heather Cartmel; two daughters, Terri (husband, Derek) Thomas and Tricia Goode; a sister, Kayla (husband, Jim) Sterritt of Greenwood; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Also surviving are close friends, Joanne Bennett and Doris Mason. Goodman Caleb 1945 Ironton Tribune – Tuesday, March 13, 1945 Caleb Goodman, 85, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Marion Melvin of Deering last night at 11:15 o’clock. The deceased was a native of Kentucky and came to Lawrence County early and his life. He spent most of his life in the Lawrence Furnace community and five years ago, about the time he became ill, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Melvin. He was married to Rebecca Puckett who preceded him in death in 1908. Fourteen children were born to them. Eight preceded Mr. Goodman in death. Those surviving are; Mrs. E. H. Fooks of Columbus, Mrs. Ethel Toms of Junction City, Kansas, Mrs. Nellie Melvin of Ironton Route One; Mrs. Martha Martin of Kelley’s Bridge, Charles Goodman of Osborne, Ohio and Elmer Goodman of Lake Wales, Fla. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. He is the last of his family; no brothers or sisters survive. He was a member of the Lawrence Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Walter and Carrie Gorby. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Veterans Emergency Relief. Gore, 60, wife of Roscoe Gore of 2623 S. 6th St., Died at 12:35 a.m. today at Lawrence County General Hospital after an illness of several months. Mrs. Gore was born at Friendship, Ohio (southwest of Portsmouth along the Ohio river). She was a devoted member of Lorraine Street Baptist Church and served as Sunday School Teacher and B.Y.F. counselor. She was also active in the Ladies Missionary Society and served as Church Treasurer for 20 years, retiring recently due to ill health. The 1924 graduate of Ironton High School attended a local college and for several years she taught private kindergarten. Surviving are her husband, Roscoe; her mother, Mrs. Anna E. Bibbey of Ironton, a son, Phillip W. Gore of South Point; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Jean) Lynd of Ironton; two grandchildren, Rodney Lynd and Phillip W. Gore. Gore J Willard 1960 Ironton Tribune – Monday, March 14, 1960 Willard Gore, 73, of Kitts Hill, died at 7:30 am today at his home after suffering a heart attack. Mr. Gore was born in Kitts Hill, February 17, 1887, and spent his entire life there. He was the son of William A. and Josephine Clement (Clemons) Gore. He was married to Dove Justice in 1923. He was a veteran of World War I. Gore William A 1948 Ironton Tribune – Friday, April 23, 1948 William A. Gore, age 84 years, died this morning at one o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emma Lambert of 320 Monroe St., with whom he resided. He had been ill for the past four months. Mr. Gore was born and reared in Kitts Hill and spent his entire life there. He was unified in marriage to Josephine Clemens, June 22, 1963 (should be 1883). She died in 1941. Nine children were born to their union. To preceding them in death Surviving are the following children: Dennis Gore of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Willard and Oscar of Kitts Hill, Rosco of Ironton, Mrs. Emma Lambert of Ironton, Mrs. Ottman Ackison of Coryville, Mrs. Cecil Boggs of Kitts Hill and 29 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, George and John Gore of Holden, W.Va., and five sisters, Mrs. George Rist, Dan Townsend and Margaret Burroughs, all of Ironton, Mrs. Jarrett Neal, Mrs. Vina Massey of Kitts Hill.
