DEAD IN HIS BARN – Aged C.H. Freeman was Found Sunday

C. Hall Freeman, one of the well-known residents of the South Point neighborhood, was found dead in his barn, about 6 o’clock Sunday morning, having hanged himself to a beam.  Mr. Freeman had left the house about 9 o’clock Saturday night, and it is thought he hanged himself shortly after that hour, as the body gave evidence of life having been extinct for some hours.  Mr. Freeman was past 60 years of age and had been mentally affected for some time.  He was sent to the asylum at Athens, but came home in June, on a trial visit.  It is supposed his rash act was due to a recurrence of his mental ailment.  The deceased leaves four children, three boys and one girl.  They are Charles, George, Edward and Dora. Freeman Thomas 63 1922 DEATH CAME UNHERALDED TO THOMAS FREEMAN – ENROUTE TO BUSINESS MEETING WHEN STRICKEN PROMINENT BUSINESSMAN Was Stricken by Apoplexy Early Tuesday Evening  The Morning Irontonian, Ironton, Ohio—Wednesday Dec. 6, 1922 Terrible in suddenness and bringing grief to probably as many friends as were ever possessed by any one man of this city, came the news early Tuesday evening that Thomas Freeman, prominent businessman had succumbed to an attack of apoplexy while enroute to a meeting of his Building & Loan Company. Mr. Freeman had just left his home at 718 South 4ths. St. after the evening meal with the intention of attending a meeting of the Lawrence Savings and Loan Company, of which he was President. As he quitted his home, he met Clint Perdue, lifelong friend and the two walked down the street together. Mr. Perdue stated that he and Mr. Freeman discussed events of their boyhood and that the latter was apparently in good health and was plainly in a cheerful mood. Just as the men reached the corner of 4th. & Center Sts. Mr. Freeman was stricken. His companion was startled to see him stagger and sway backward. Before he could recover from his astonishment Mr. Freeman had fallen. Help was hastily summoned, and the stricken man was removed to the home of Dr. Hunter, nearby. There stimulants were administered, artificial respiration was resorted to and everything that medical science could do was done but without avail. Mrs. Freeman was summoned and reached Dr. Hunter’s residence before the end came but Mr. Freeman never regained consciousness. Mr. Freeman was born near South Point, this county, and was 63 years of age. He has been a residence of this city for the past 30 years, most of which time he has been engaged in the grocery business. For several years he conducted a grocery at 4th. & Lawrence Sts. and later established the Freeman Grocery at 3rd. & Vernon Sts. He sold the latter business about two years ago and became interested in the Markin-Blanton Co., wholesale grocers, where he was a director at the time of his death. For the last few years, he has been an active operator in real estate and conducted an extensive business in this field. Probably no man in this county enjoyed a larger personal acquaintance or had a greater number of friends than did Thomas Freeman. Always affable and congenital, his continued success in different enterprises made no change in his jovial disposition and to his friends, in whose welfare he always maintained a keen interest, he was known only as Tom. The success, which he achieved and which he would obtain, came solely by his own efforts and is the result of his untiring devotion to business. From a mode beginning he fought his way to an enviable position in the business life of this city and his record has been one of which any man might be proud. As the news traveled about the city last evening, many expressions of grief were heard and many, unable to believe the news of his sudden death, sought the telephones to confirm the story. Thomas Freeman has gone. His death has brought to a close a life that was full of activity and by reason of that life his city is just a little better, and his friends are just a little richer. In addition to his wife, five daughters survive to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. They are Mrs. Walter Geswein and Mrs. James Dudley of this city, Mrs. Albert Geswein and Mrs. Lucille Minor of Chicago and Miss Betty Freeman of Huntington, W.Va. Two brothers and two sisters of this city, Dave and George Freeman, Hattie Stapleton and Mattie Cornell also survive. The funeral arrangements, which will be in charge of Bingaman and Jones, had not been made last night and will be announced later. (Friday, Dec. 8, 1922) All the friends of the late Thomas Freeman are invited to attend the services, which will be held from the residence on south 4th. St. this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. The I.O.O.F. will be officially represented by a large delegation as the deceased was one of that lodge’s most honored and esteemed members. Interment will be in Woodland with Bingaman and Jones in charge.

Civil War Obituary – (Wednesday, July 17, 1918) William Dickerson Freeman Obit Submitted by Bobbi Mann William Dickerson Freeman, Co. B, 112th. Volunteer Infantry, Stark County, Illinois. Enlisted at Bradford on Aug. 12, 1862 William was born April 8, 1839 in Lawrence County, Ohio and died July 17, 1918 in Janesville, Greenwood County, Kansas. (Left Lawrence County when he was 18 to settle in Bradford, Stark County, Illinois.) He was the son of David Parker and Nancy Martin Freeman and the grandson of William and Sarah Parker Freeman who settled in Lawrence County in the late 1820s. He was a brother of James Freeman who served with Company A ,188th. Ohio Volunteer Infantry and Moses Alfred Freeman who served with Company H, 6th. Reg. Ohio Cavalry Volunteers. William was 23 years of age 6’1 1/2″ high, fair complexion, hazel eyes, auburn hair and a farmer when he enlisted. Nov. 17th. 1892 Personally, appeared before me, Lynis Brocock, a Notary Public for said Stark County, State of Illinois, Francis J. Liggett, aged 48 years of Bradford, Stark County, Illinois, who first being sworn on his oath deposes and says:  I was a Private in Company B, 112th. Regiment Illinois Volunteers and was well acquainted with William D. Freeman, the above-named claimant who was a Private in the same company. I was well acquainted with the claimant William D. Freeman for some five years before the breaking out of the late Civil War. Freeman and I enlisted together and at the same time in the said Company B, 112th. Illinois Volunteers. On the morning of the 18th. Of Sept. 1863, William D. Freeman, myself and two other boys of the same Company were captured by the enemy while in action in line of duty at Cleveland, Tennessee, after our capture we were taken by the enemy to Dalton, GA, thence to Atlanta and then to Richmond, VA and on the 27th of September 1863 we were imprisoned on Belle Island. Remaining there until the 10th. Day of March 1864. During our stay on the Island, all through the hard winter we were compelled to sleep on the bare sand with not even a straw under us and not a blanket, overcoat or anything else to cover ourselves with. To keep from freezing eighteen of us slept together, lying huddled up together “spoon fashion” to increase the animal heat that we might live at all. William D. Freeman during all my acquaintance with him up to that time, had been a hearty, robust man having no ailments whatever. During the month of January of our stay on the Island he complained heavily of Rheumatism in his back and hips, brought on as unvarying behavior by the extreme exposure we had to undergo in sleeping on the ground in a more than half frozen condition. We were taken from the Island to Andersonville in Georgia, getting there on the 18th.Day of March 1864. Here again we were compelled to sleep on the bare cold ground. Freeman continued to suffer much with the Rheumatism contracted on the Island. Soon after our imprisonment in Andersonville, Freeman, myself and another prisoner by the name of Stacy plotted to make our escape. On the 24th. Day of May 1864, we put our plot into execution and escaped. We hid ourselves in swamps, were chased by bloodhounds and were hunted down like wild beasts. Stacy was recaptured in about 3 or 4 days and taken back to Andersonville. Freeman and I kept in hiding the best we could and kept on traveling toward the Union lines-meeting with many discouragement’s and hair breath escapes. After about twenty days of suffering, untold hunger and fatigue, we reached Sherman’s Army and the Etowah River in Georgia. We were delayed much during the day of our escape, on account of Freeman being unable to travel having the Rheumatism so severe in his back and hips, when we got into our lines we were each given a furlough for 30 days. We went home together, went back to the service together, remained together when discharged at the same and together, went home together and lived until 1878 when Freeman went to Kansas to live. Francis J. Liggett
