Most of the newspapers are from Ironton, Ohio, Huntington, WV, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Point Pleasant, WV. Even though this is not a complete list, it is important material for the genealogist.
Earles Deasy E 1975 Zanesville Paper – Saturday, April 12, 1975 D.E. Earles, 95, of Crooksville, Route 2, a retired farmer, died Thursday morning at the home of his daughter. He was born in Lawrence County, near Ironton, April 23, 1879. Mr. Earles was a member of Zion Christian Church at Portersville. Surviving are his widow, Alice Kirkbride Earles; four daughters, Mrs. James (Pansy) Toth of North Canton, Mrs. Ruby Masterson of Malta Route 1, with whom he was staying, Mrs. Jack (Alice) Lay and Mrs. Ralph (Vera) Evans both of Cincinnati; a son, Evert Earles of North Canton, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in East Branch Church of Christ. Burial will be in East Branch Cemetery. Friends may call in Geoble Funeral Home at Crooksville after 2 p.m. today and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Family will be present 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. |
Earles Maggie Russell 1963 Ironton Tribune – (Sunday, March 24, 1963) Mrs. Margaret (Maggie) Russell Earles, 89, of Willow Wood, died Friday morning at her home. Mrs. Earles was born in Lawrence County on April 17, 1873, daughter of the late John and Evelyn Stewart Russell. Her husband, John Earles, preceded her in death seven years ago. She was a member of Symmes Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Joel of Chesapeake and Grayson of Greenup, Ky.: two daughters, Mrs. Fern Ellcessor of Columbus, and Mrs. Paul Goodall of Willowwood. Earls Martha Wall 1972 Ironton Tribune – (Tuesday, January 11, 1972) MRS. MARTHA WALL EARLS, 75, of Scottown, Ohio, died Monday in a Huntington Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Center Point Baptist Church there by the Rev. Amos Wilson. Burial will be in the Perkins Ridge Cemetery at Scottown. Born April 10, 1896, she was a daughter of the late Trumbo and Sarah Hayes Wall. Her husband, Cecil Earls, died in 1960. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Gerald Berry of Proctorville and Mrs. Bertha Lewis of Elyria, Ohio; two brothers, Ralph Wall of Scottown and Thomas Wall of Columbus; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Garnell of Columbus, five grandchildren and a great grandchild. Mr. Edmonds, the former owner of Edmonds Grocery at Glenwood, was born March 1, 1885, at Glenwood, a son of the late Benjamin and Minter Cremeans Edmonds. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lorena Boster Edmonds; three daughters, Mrs. Zola Duncan of Point Pleasant and Mrs. Zena Holley and Mrs. Roma Holley of Glenwood; a son, Grover Cleo Edmonds of Glenwood; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted today at 1 p.m., at Beech Grove Church near Glenwood by the Rev. Herman DeBoard and the Rev. Sam Egnor. Burial will the Pete Meadows Cemetery at Glenwood. Edmonds Kathleen Meadows 1992 Point Pleasant Register – (Wed., December 23, 1992) Kathleen Edmonds, 77, of Ashton died Monday, December 21, 1992. She was the daughter of the late Leland Stanford and Mabel Smith Meadows. Edmonds was preceded in death by her husband, Sandford S. Edmonds and a son, James Edmonds. She attended Palestine Baptist Church. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Mabel Bennett of Georgia, Mrs. Margaret Pender of Ravenswood, W.Va., Mrs. Phyllis Parsons, Mrs. Lucille Cornell and Mrs. Jean Cornell, all of Ashton, and Mrs. Bonnie Lloyd of Teays Valley; and a four sons, Franklin Edmonds of Ashton, Woodrow Edmonds of Glenwood, Charles Edmonds of Milton and Paul Edmonds of Mt. She was born in Mason County, September 23, 1886, a daughter of the late John and Estaline M. Holley. Her husband, Jeremiah Edmonds, died in August 1953. Survivors include; six daughters, Mrs. Linda Stover of Delaware, Ohio, Mrs. Sula Holley of Huntington, Mrs. Vina Kern of Dover, Fla., Mrs. Martha Stover of Ashland and Mrs. Anna Edmonds and Mrs. Marie Barker of Glenwood; three sons, Calvin of Milton, Dallas and Melvin Edmonds both of Glenwood; and three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Barley of Huntington, Mrs. Maude Edmonds and Mrs. Mabel Ashworth both of Ashland; three brothers, Sardine Holley of Milton, Ela Holley of Huntington and Sam Holley of Ashton, 31 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Edmonds Newell F 1962 Point Pleasant Register – (Saturday, October 20, 1962) Newell Franklin Edmonds, 66, a longtime resident of Glenwood, died Friday afternoon in Pleasant Valley Hospital after a long illness. He was a retired employee of the H.K. Porter Company Connor Steel Division in Huntington. Mr. Edmonds was born April 5, 1896, the son of the late Esom and Elizabeth Smith Edmonds. Survivors include, his wife, Mrs. Malissa Jordan Edmonds of Fraziers Bottom, five sons, Robert, Lewie and Herbert Edmonds, all of Fraziers Bottom, John and Gary Edmonds of Glenwood; three daughters, Mrs. Van Wright of Pliny, Mrs. Robert Criner of Baltimore, Md., and Dorothy Edmonds, at home. Also surviving are two brothers, Riley Edmonds of Huntington, and Ben Edmonds of Columbus, and two sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Black of Glenwood and Mrs. Nevada Smith of Milton. Born December 7, 1916, at Glenwood, he was the son of the late Nimrod Edmonds and Maude Holley Edmonds. He attended Faith Gospel Missionary Church in Glenwood, was a construction worker and a member of the AFL-CIO labor union. Surviving are his wife, Delphia Qualls Edmonds; one son, Wendell Wesley Edmonds of Ashton; three step daughters, Rosa Fuller, Wiladena N. Pinkerman and Madeline Pinkerman, all of Huntington; three sisters, Naomi Gue of San Pedro, Calif., Myrtle Holley of Huntington and Evelyn Lefford of Illinois; two brothers, Wendell Edmonds of Ashton and Charles Edwards of Glenwood; and five step grandchildren. He was born July 24, 1911, in Lawrence County, a son of the late John Charles and Estella Leighty Edwards. He was a graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and Rio Grande College. He was a retired teacher in Perry Township and worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant. He retired in 1976 from the Southern California Chemical Company in Ironton. He attended the Centenary United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Easter Click Edwards whom he married in 1934; four daughters, Patricia Ann Edwards of Route 1, Ironton, Sheila Mootz of Route 1, Kitts Hill, Sharon Mays of Little Ice Creek Road and Karen Mays of Route 1, South Point; and one son, Charles Edward of Ironton, and 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Edwards of Xenia, Ohio; one sister, Laura Kramer of Ironton. His body was prepared for burial by Undertaker Schneider and was taken to the home of his father Frank Elkins on McKinney Creek. Funeral services will be held at the Getaway M.E. Church Saturday at (2) p.m. with Rev. McKnight of Coal Grove in charge. Burial will be made in Getaway Cemetery. Mr. Elkins’ wife preceded him in death two years ago. Survivors include her husband, Rufus Ellcessor, to whom she was married Sept. 25, 1926, in Gallipolis; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son Deryl Ellcessor, in 1984; two brothers; and one sister. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a former member of the Abagail Circle and Business Professional Women. Mrs. Ellcessor was born in Scottown, June 27, 1871, a daughter of the late Greer and Hanna Corn Dillon. She married Robert Ellcessor and he preceded her in death in 1955. Ellcessor Florence Boster 2006 Gallipolis Daily Independent – (Tuesday, March 21, 2006) Florence G. ‘Tootie’ Ellcessor, 77, of Gallipolis, died Monday morning, March 20, 2006, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus. She was born July 3, 1928, in Gallia County, daughter of the late Ralph Charles and Shirley Edith Danner Boster. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Bellville. Tootie retired as the Director of Nutritional Services at Holzer Medical Center. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Elizabeth Circle and helped with the meals that the church women prepared. She also volunteered her time at Our House and at the University of Rio Grande. She is survived by five children, Marc (Sandy) Ellcessor of Williamsport, Ohio, Ginger (Tim) Hemsworth of Cincinnati, Kim (Rick) Butcher of Gallipolis, June (Ty) Somerville of Point Pleasant, W.Va. and Chris Ellcessor of Gallipolis; and six grandchildren, Erin and Jill Hemsworth, Adam and MacKenzie Greene and Taylor and Alex Somerville. Ellis Violet Dunlap 1944 Ironton Tribune – (Monday, February 28, 1944) Mrs. Violet Ellis – Mrs. Violet Ellis, forty years old, wife of B.(Ben) Frank Ellis of Chesapeake, Route 1, who died at her home yesterday will be buried in Black Cemetery near Chesapeake following funeral services tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the Mount Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Clifford Suiter officiating. Surviving in addition to the husband are a son, Ace Ellis at home; six daughters, Mrs. Garnet (Conley) Day, Mrs. Anna Lee Day and Mrs. Dorothy Johnson of Chesapeake, and Ester, Janet and Shelva Ellis, at home; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. (Robert and Mae) Dunlap of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; one sister, Mrs. Mona Morgan of Charleston, W.Va., and six brothers, Floyd, Robert, Virgil, Arthur, Jewell and W.E. Dunlap of Point Pleasant. The body will be taken to the residence today from the Schneider Funeral Home at Chesapeake. |

He was the son of Mrs. Blanche Ellis, of Chesapeake, and the late Rev. John Ellis. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Betty; two sons, Walter and Eddie, both at home; one sister, Mrs. Geneva Nichols, of Detroit, Mich. Estes James W 1996 Ironton Tribune – (Thursday, May 23, 1996) James Estes September 9, 1919 – May 20, 1996 James W. Estes, 76, of Ironton died Monday at River Valley Health System. The Ironton native was born September 10, 1919, the son of the late James J. Estes and Laura Felty Estes. He was the husband of Verna D. Brammer Estes, who survives. He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired laborer for the Street Department of the city of Ironton. He attended Ironton schools and lived in the Ironton area all his life. He was a member of the VFW Post 8850. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters and sons in law, Penny and Dan Horn of Orlando, Fla., and Lisa Shope of Ironton; a son, James D. Estes of Kitts Hill; two grandchildren; two sisters, Laura Corbin of Ironton and Janie Paulie of Hattiesburg, Pa.; and two brothers, Jack Estes and Bernard Estes, both of Toledo, (Ohio). Graveside service will be two p.m. Friday at Woodland Cemetery, with the Rev. James Cremeans officiating. Visitation will be at one p.m. Friday at the Phillips Funeral Home. Military graveside rites will be performed by VFW Post 8850. |
