Dixon Dexel – 1952 Point Pleasant Register – (Tuesday, April 15, 1952) Dexel Dixon Killed Near Ashton Mason County’s Third Fatality Mason County’s third highway fatality of 1952, the second within a week, took place about noon yesterday only Ashton-Milton Road about 4 miles from Ashton the Sturgeon farm. Dexel Dixon, 31, whose address is Ashton RFD, died of a broken neck received when he was caught between the car door and a rock according to investigating officers and the County Coroner, Dr. Edna Gettles. T here were no witnesses to the accident, but officials reconstructed the death as followed, from evidence found at the scene: Dixon had attempted to turn his car, a 1941 four, around near a junction of the road with another, close to a bridge spanning the creek at this point. A high steep bank near the road made it necessary to watch closely, and apparently the driver had opened the car to be better able to see as he backed the car. Marks on the ground indicated that the door had caught as the car traveled backwards, throwing Dixon from the car. When found by the neighbor, the victim’s head was pinned between the car door and the rock against which the door was jammed. The force with which the car jammed the rock was indicated by the extent to which the door was sprung from the frame of the car; it had been forced open more than a foot beyond normal limit with the hinge arrangement broken, and could not be closed after the car was moved. John Dalton, who lives near the scene of the accident, saw the car and its odd position, not moving for some time and went to investigate. Finding Dixon caught in the position described, and being unable to move him, he moved the car far enough to permit rescue.  He and several others who gathered at the scene lifted Dixon onto the backseat of the car where he was lying when officers arrived. Death appeared to have occurred instantly, as the Coroner placed the cause as a broken neck. Sheriff Frank Morrison, Deputy Toral Morrison, and Dr. Gettles arrived about 1:30 p.m after some delay had occurred in placing the call to the Sheriff’s office. After releasing Dixon, it was necessary to travel into the river to make the call. Time in death was placed as near noon, the time being further established by the fact that Dixon had been in the post office at Ashton between 11:30 and 12:00. Dixon leaves the wife and three children. He was a farmer and lived in the vicinity of the place where he was killed, it was reported. The body has been taken to a Funeral Home in Cabell County, where funeral arrangements are being made. Other fatalities occurring in the Mason County this year are John Arrington, who was struck by a passing car near his home at Salt Creek as he crossed the road on the afternoon of February 13: and John Gipson of Huntington, who was killed on the night of April 8, when he was thrown from his car as it left the road and overturned near Mercers Bottom. Both Arrington and Gibson were killed on Rt. 2, while Dixon was killed on a secondary road leading into Rt. 2. The road designated as Rt. 2 is considered by authorities as one of the most dangerous highways in this section of the state, it was said by the local officers recently.
