Most of the newspapers are from Ironton, Ohio, Huntington, WV, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Point Pleasant, WV. Even though this is not a complete list, it is important material for the genealogist.
Ackison, Stella 1974 Ironton Tribune – Thursday, September 26, 1974 Mrs. Otman Ackison Following an illness of two months, Mrs. Stella Ackison, 82, of 1178 Park Dr., died at 6 AM today at the home of a son, Robert Ackison, of 2021 S. 6th St. Mrs. Ackison, a lifelong resident of Lawrence County, was a daughter of the late William and Josephine Clement (Clemons) Gore. She was a member of central Christian church. In 1919 she was married to Otman Ackison, who died in 1971. Surviving are four sons, Odell, Hugh and Robert Ackison of Ironton, William Ackison of Superior, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Boggs of Ironton; two brothers, Rosco Gore of Ironton and Oscar Gore of Rock Camp. The body is at Phillips Funeral Home where friends may call after 6 pm Friday. Services will be 1 pm Saturday at the funeral home conducted by Minister Glen Wheeler. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. |
Adams Andrew J 1934 Huntington Herald Dispatch – Saturday, June 09, 1934 Andrew J. Adams – Seventy-nine years old, of 2532 Third Avenue, died at seven o’clock last night in the Chesapeake and Ohio hospital. He was born in Virginia on May 14, 1855 and came to Huntington in 1872; is a retired C & O veteran and a charter member of the Seventh Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church. Surviving are two sons, Harry E. Adams of Huntington and Otis H. Adams of Sioux City, Iowa and one daughter, Mrs. Grace Scott of Huntington. Funeral arrangements will wait the arrival of a son from Iowa. |
Adams Helen Dillon 1998 Springfield New Sun – Tuesday, Mar 10, 1998 Helen D. (Dillon) Adams, 81, of Springfield, died Saturday, March 7, 1998 at 11:36 PM in Eaglewood Care Center. She was born February 10, 1917 and Polkadotte, Ohio, the daughter of Ely Sart and Magdalena (Walters) Dillon. She was a resident of Springfield for nearly 50 years and retired from Navstar after 27 years in 1978. She was a member of numerous bowling leagues and the Eagles Lodge. She is survived by three children, Archie Ellis of Oxford, Alabama, Connie (James) Deel and Linda (James) Hall, both of Springfield; two step children, Carolyn (James) Syrus in Karl Adams; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren A. Adams on August 5, 1980; five brothers; three sisters; and three infant grandchildren. Friends may visit with the family Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the Jackson Lytle and Ingling Williams Funeral Home, North Limestone Chapel. Funeral services will be held there Wednesday at 10 PM by Rev. Kevin Mays officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park. Adams Ruby Sparling 1949 Ironton Tribune – (Tuesday, June 04, 1949) After an illness of several months, Mrs. Ruby Adams, 77, of Centenary, Ironton, Rt. 1, died at General Hospital Monday evening at 5:20 o’clock. She had been a patient there for the past two weeks. Mrs. Adams was born at Coal Grove, May 26 1872, a daughter of Sam and Mary (Markins) Sparling. She was married to William S. Adams in August 1893. He died April 8, 1948. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons and one daughter, William E. Adams of Coal Grove, Ohio and John Adams of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Cynthia Maddy of Ironton, Rt. 1. One son died in 1940. The following brothers and sister survived, Daniel Sparling of Coal Grove, Charles Sparling of Deering, Henry Deering and Mrs. Mattie Sperry of Deering. Adams Warren A 1980 Springfield Daily News – Wednesday, October 6, 1980 Warren A. Adams, 59, of 1435 Hyannis Dr. was dead on arrival at 2:45 PM Tuesday in Community Hospital after a heart attack at Northridge Bowling Lanes. He was born September 26, 1920, a son of John and Corina Souders Adams. He had been a timekeeper of Cooper Industries, retiring in 1972 after 15 years of service. He was a member of Champion Aerie No. 397, FOE, and of various bowling clubs. Survivors include his wife, Helen D.; three daughters, Belinda Kay Adams, Mrs. James (Connie Sue) Deel and Mrs. James (Carolyn) Syrus, all of Springfield; two sons, Carl of Texas and Archie Ellis of Springfield; a brother, Harvey of Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. John (Clara) Oiler and Mrs. William (Lillian) Caulfield of Springfield; 13 grandchildren and a grandchild. Two brothers and four sisters are dead. Littleton Funeral Home will hold calling hours from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and services 10:30 am Friday. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. |
Adams William S 1948 Ironton Tribune – Friday, April 09, 1948 Will S. Adams, age 78, Ironton Rt. 1, a resident of Centenary, Perry township for many years, died at eight o’clock Thursday night in General Hospital. He had been a patient there since Monday. Mr. Adams was born in Boyd County, Ky., moving to Coal Grove when he was a child. It 1891 he was united in marriage to Ruby Sparling and they resided in Perry township. Four children were born to their union. A son, Sam died in 1940. Surviving are the wife and these children, William of Coal Grove, John of Dayton, and Mrs. Asenith Maddy of Rt. 1, Ironton. 10 grandchildren also survive. Two brothers, John Adams of Poca, Wv and A. L. Adams of Huntington, WV, also survive. Mr. Adams was active in the affairs of the community for years and was widely known and esteemed. He was a member of the Rock Camp I. O. O. F. (International Order of Odd Fellows). Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home after noon Saturday. Last rites will be held Sunday at two o’clock at Centenary Methodist Church with the Rev. J. D. Adkins, 86, of Chesapeake died Wednesday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, W.Va. The Lawrence County native was born September 15, 1912, the daughter of the late Cauley and Gracie Ferris Hunt. She was the wife of the late Garland Adkins. She also was preceded in death by a son, Larry Adkins. Survivors include three sons, Myrl Adkins of Chesapeake, Lowell Adkins of Ila, Ga., and Rick Adkins of Radcliff, Ky.; two daughters, Virginia Lilly of Plant City, Fla., and Phyllis Schooley of Chesapeake; two brothers, Paul Hunt and Russell Hunt, both of Proctorville; and five sisters, Betty Elsasser and Frances Patterson, both of Proctorville, Georgia Singer and Geneva Goodall, both of Huntington, and Estel Smith of Ironton. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point, with the Rev. Eddie Salmons officiating. There will be no visitation. Born March 15, 1889, in Lawrence County, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late John and Ella Ferris Freeman. He was born October 8, 1918 in Lawrence County, Ohio, a son of the late Ephraim Belle Black Adkins. He was a World War II Army veteran. Adkins Clovis Sr 1963 Huntington Herald Dispatch – Monday, April 15, 1963 Clovis Adkins – Sixty-seven years old, a resident of the Gotham Hotel, Third Ave. at 8th St., was dead on arrival at a Huntington Hospital yesterday at 1:15 PM. Death was attributed to natural cause. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 AM at Bethlehem United Baptist Church on Raccoon Creek by the Rev. Frank Canterbury and the Rev. Truman Adkins. Burial will be in Cedar Cliff Cemetery on East Lynn Route 1. A veteran of World War I, he formally was employed in Detroit. He was born in Wayne County, a son of the late William Martin and Elizabeth Ferguson Adkins. A retired employee of Blue Jay Manufacturers Co. for 25 years, she was born November 26, 1893, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Manford and Nannie Dillon Paugh. Her husband, Z. (Zenas) W. Adkins, died in 1966. He was born May 31, 1930 in Lawrence County, Ohio to the late Jake and Ida Halleck Adkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandchild Jacob Arron. He was retired from ACF Industries after 31 years. Adkins Innie Lewis 1947 Ironton Tribune – Thursday, January 15, 1947 Mrs. Innie V. Adkins, Third Street, died this morning at three o’clock at her home following a lingering illness. She was born March 27, 1881 at Huntington, a daughter of the late William and Rebecca Lewis. Born December 21, 1901, she was united in marriage to William Adkins. To their union two daughters were born; Mrs. Ruby Whaley and Mrs. Irene Ferguson of North Kenova, both of whom survive. Other survivors are 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and three brothers and sisters: George Lewis of Wheeling, W.Va., Minnie Bradley and Mrs. May Warren, both of Huntington. The deceased is a member of the Methodist Church at Bradrick, Ohio. Friends may call at the home at 1010 S. Third after six o’clock this evening. Adkins, 53, of Chesapeake died Thursday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington West Virginia. The Huntington native was born September 20, 1944, the son of the late Harold and Leona Elkins Atkins. He was the husband of Teresa LeClaire Adkins, who survives. He was a heavy equipment operator for Columbia Gas transmission Corp. in St. Albans, West Virginia. He was a member of Proctorville Masonic Lodge 550, a member of El Hasta Temple of Ironton, a U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam war and a member of Chesapeake Post 640, American Legion. Survivors in addition to his wife, include two daughters and one son-in-law Tara and Lincoln Sizemore and Andrea Adkins, all of Chesapeake; two sisters-in-law Donna Newman and Brenda Lafond both of Chesapeake; a mother in law Betty LeClair of Chesapeake; and one granddaughter. Mr. Adkins was born October 16, 1882 in Lawrence County, a son of the late Pleasant and Mary Jane Bowen Adkins. He was a retired carman with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, retiring in 1947. Mr. Adkins was a member of the Moose Lodge of Huntington and the Brotherhood of Railroad Carman. His wife, Innie Adkins, preceded him in death in 1947. He was also preceded in death by one sister. He was married in 1904 to Grace Bryant, who survives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie McComas Asbury; sister Ilva Asbury Merritt; two brothers Glenn and Fred Asbury; three brothers-in-law, Bill Childers, Clarence McComas and his wife Ferne, and Harold McComas. He is survived by one daughter, Connie Suiter-Merb and her husband Roger of Proctorville, Ohio; one son, Eddie Sites and his wife Teresa of Gilman, Iowa; two brothers, Glenn (Lenore) Asbury and Hobert (Mildred) Asbury; one sister, Jewell Asbury; sister-in-law Gladys Childers; grandsons Jon “Chad” (Natalie) Belville, Christopher Belville and Mark Sites; granddaughters Tami (Jason) Vaughn, Angela (Ryan) Mrazek, and Natalie Hofstetter; great-grandchildren Sydney Belville, Haylee, Brennan and Alexis Vaughn, Cassie, Sydney, Markayla and Madison Sites, and Tanner Mrazek; and several special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was the son of the late William F. Ashworth Sr. and Orpha Tomlinson Ashworth. He was the husband of Hazel Keeney McCoy Ashworth, who survives. He was born June 5, 1932, at Leatherwood, Ohio. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the U.S. Army and was retired from the Lawrence County Engineers, after 33 years of service. He attended the Dawson-Bryant Schools and Union Baptist Church at Dog Fork. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Carol Webb Ashworth; three children, Harvey Dale Ashworth, Randy Lee Ashworth and Karen Sue Ashworth, three brothers, William F. Ashworth Jr., Norman Ashworth and Wilbur Ashworth. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two children, Carol Jean Ashworth of Louisville, Ky., and Michael J. She was a member of the Auburn Lutheran Church and New York Central Ladies Auxiliary. For a number of years, she had taught accordion lessons. Her husband, Raymond, preceded her in death in September 1938.
