Real Estate Boom in 1952

The Cincinnati Enquirer, 20 Jul 1952, Sun, Page 81

Values Soaring In Rural Area – Chesapeake, Ohio, July 19 – A real estate boom involving hundreds of thousands of dollars has the folks in rural Lawrence County, Ohio, 20 miles north of here, somewhat bewildered.

Farmers in the hilly Greasy Ridge section around Rappsburg say they are asking and just about getting their price for land, which until recently had a relatively low value. A reporter who toured the area said residents had heard rumors of a new atomic energy plant, the discovery of oil, uranium, or plutonium, and an extensive strip coal mining project involving millions of dollars.

The best probability appears to be the latter. But the rumors have skyrocketed the price of land, and many farmers have boosted their prices with the hope that Uncle Sam is interested. The rumor about “an atomic energy plant” in the area is mainly substantiated.

The Atomic Energy Commission says it definitely Is considering building a big plant in the Ohio Valley, but this particular area in Lawrence County has never been mentioned as a possible site. Portsmouth’s interests have been waging a campaign to have the plant in that area.
