William H. H. Adkins Civil War Veteran

William H. H. Adkins was born in 1830 in Kentucky. Sept. 1, 1850, he married Lucinda Wiley in Louisa, Lawrence Co., Ky. She was the daughter of Hezekiah Wiley and Lucretia Nelson and the granddaughter of Jenny Wiley. They had six children. George Washington, Samuel B., John, Nancy A. Jeremiah (lived only six mos.), and Benjamin.

William was a Private in the Civil War. He was in the 14th.Ky.Inf. Co. D.  He served from 1861-1865. In about 1869, he moved his family to Lawrence County, Ohio. He was a farmer and a well-known preacher in Lawrence County. A later newspaper article from a local paper listed him as one of a group of ministers that started an evangelistic movement after the Civil War and established several churches in the area. It was called the Bethlehem Association.

The members listed were ( Elders J. E. Rice, Phillip Hager, Andrew White, James Kirk, W. H. H. Adkins, William (Sonny) Dillon, H .H. Saunders, R. L. Hollandsworth, and Joshua Damron.) Also listed were the churches that were established for the Bethlehem Assn. (Center Point, Lucinda Chapel, New Zion, Good  Hope, Linnville, Palestine, Guyan Valley, Osa Chapel, and Bethel.) The first Sunday in Sept. 1895, they held the last meeting in Lawrence Co. when they met at Center Point Church and founded Center Point Assn—composed of their churches in Ohio and Kentucky. Linville Church had only existed since April of that year, 27 April 1895. It was organized with W. H. H. Adkins-moderator and G. L. Wickline, the clerk.

In March of 1881, his wife Lucinda died. She is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on Greasy Ridge. At that time, he had a monument put at the grave site. On one side is his name, the way he signed it, Atkins. So whoever he ordered it from spelled the name the same. Some of his children from his first marriage used Atkins, the children from 2nd. Marriage used Adkins. His Civil War Pension papers and census used both D and T. Also, he buried his second wife there.

He lived in several places in Lawrence Co., Ironton, Rappsburg, Polkadotte, Scottown, Greasy Ridge, and Miller, to name a few.

He married his second wife in August 1881,5 mos. After his first wife died in March, her name was Dolly A. Massie. They had three children, Mary Lucy Jane, Ada Susan, and James William. James lived only three mos.

Mary married Ed Dillon. Ada married James Nance.

Dolly had a son, ten years old when they were married. Dennis L. Massie  born Mar.15,1871. He married Elizabeth Hunley.

After Dolly died, William married Susan Shafer, daughter of Samuel and  Mary Shafer.

In 1896 William married his 4th wife, Nancy White, Joplin, and Hutchison. Nancy was the daughter of Benjamin White. Her first husband, John Joplin, died-she then married James Hutchison. They were divorced. She then married William. William died in 1912 and is buried in Miller Cemetery, Miller, Ohio. He has a Civil War monument. His 4th wife, Nancy, lived till 1934.
