Spanish American Veteran Died at Age 88 – Don E. Sumpter, 88, of Chesapeake, Ohio, died late Monday night at his home. Born on 12 April 1878 in Lawrence County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Captain Simeon and Mary Duncan Sumpter. Mr. Sumpter retired as an employee of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Shops at Raceland, KY, in 1950. He was a member of Mohawk Tribe No. 11, a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Carmen, and a veteran of the Spanish-American War, serving with Company E, First WV Regt.
He also once was a head engineer and pilot for the Twenty-sixth St. Ferry across the Ohio River here.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Herbert McDaniel and Mrs. Clyde Holderby, both of Chesapeake and Mrs. Roy Fulks of Proctorville; two grandchildren, Mrs. Marlene Pannel of Chesapeake and James E. Sumpter of Wellsville, Ohio, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 pm at Schneider Funeral Home, Chesapeake, by Rev. Homer Webb. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery. Friends may call the funeral home after 6 pm Wednesday.
