Louis Dixon Civil War Veteran 98th Birthday

Louis Dixon of Coryville, Lawrence County, Ohio’s Oldest Civil War Veteran, Observes His 98th Birthday

Ironton Register 24 December 1933

Louis Dixon of Coryville, the oldest Civil War veteran in Lawrence county, observed his 98th birthday on Friday, December 15, 1933, and received congratulations from those friends who visited him at his home.

Mr. Dixon was born December 15, 1835, in Wayne County, KY [WV?-mmk].  He enlisted as a Civil War veteran on October 1, 1861, serving with the Union forces until 1865.

In 1867, he settled in Louisville, KY, and in 1901 came to Lawrence County to reside.  He had since made this his home.  His wife, formerly Elizabeth Davis of Louisville, preceded him in death years ago.  His oldest son is 73 years old, a ripe age for most people.

Mr. Dixon enjoyed unusually good health up until last fall.  He visited his former home in Louisville in October, became ill shortly after returning, and has since been confined to his home for the greater part of the time.  He has retained his interest in national, state, and local affairs regardless of his advanced age and is one of the most interesting residents of this county.

Many residents will remember him as the aged man who, for many years, was the forebearer of Dick Lambert Post GAR.  And today, he stands as the oldest veteran of that organization.
