John Fox Civil War Veteran Celebrates 85th Birthday

Civil War Veteran John Fox celebrates his 85th birthday in Coal Grove, Ohio. This story was extracted from the Ironton Evening Tribune and was published on Feb. 4, 1929

Mr. John Fox of Coal Grove is celebrating his 85th birthday today. He is a Civil War veteran born at Lawrence Furnace, this county, in 1844.

When sixteen years of age, he moved to Lyra, Scioto County. He entered the Civil War when only 17 1/2 years of age in Company G of the 27th Ohio Infantry, he started with Sherman’s march and was badly wounded on July 4, 1864, at Rough’s Mill, GA, about 7 miles from Atlanta, GA.

He was in Marietta Hospital in Atlanta for almost a year, returned to Camp Dennison, Ohio, and was discharged on August 3, 1865. He carried his arm in a sling for three years and has no bone in his arm from the shoulder to his elbow.
Mr. Fox participated in the following battles:

  • Island #10
  • The First Seige at Corinth, Mississippi 
  • The Second Battle at Corinth, Mississippi 
  • Parker’s Cross Roads, Tennessee 
  • Grant’s first expedition to Pittsburgh, where the army divided, his company going to Mississippi and Tennessee. He was in the last fight of Johnson’s army.

Mr. Fox married Miss Elizabeth VANHORN, a twin sister of the late David Halley, on December 23, 1875. The following children will honor their father next Sunday when they will all be home to celebrate his birthday:

Two daughters and one son have passed away. A family reunion will be held for Mr. and Mrs. John Fox of Park Street, Coal Grove, next Sunday when all the family is expected.
