Joel Sartain

This is not a completed transcription of the entire records, and I am sure many mistakes have been made. These records are extremely hard to read. Please refer to original records for your own interpretation.

Joel Sartain was a Revolutionary War veteran residing in Gallia County, Ohio, on the 21st of July 1836. He appeared in open court as a Gallia County, Ohio resident, 64 years old.

This was sworn on oath that he was born in Pennsylvania county, Virginia, in 1762, where he lived for eight years, then moved with his parents to Montgomery county, Virginia, where he lived until 1815 or 1816. He then moved to Kanawha county, Virginia, and lived there for two years, then moved to Gallia County, Ohio, where he has resided.

He volunteered sometime in May 1778 and served with Captain John Donelson, who commanded a company of militia from Pennsylvania, Virginia. His company was stationed at Hatfield Point on Big Storry creek in Montgomery County, Virginia, where he volunteered.

The company Lieutenant was John Gwynn, and he served and said county at the said board? under the command of said captain until September following, in the same year 1778, when he was discharged by the said captain but received no discharge papers.

Sometime in April or May 1779, he again volunteered in the same company as said, on Little Storry Creek in Montgomery county, Virginia, under the command of Captain Snyder and again served until dismissed in the same manner last by said Captain Snyder, sometime in September of the same year 1780.

Around April or May in the following year, 1781, he volunteered again in like manner aforesaid at said Fort on Little Storry Creek in Montgomery county, Virginia, under the command of the same captain sometime in September of the same year, 1781. That he knows of no person by whom he can prove the services aforesaid nor any person now living that served with him during said service, except Humphrey Brumfield, who now lives in his neighborhood and was with him during the greater part of said service. Brumfield is now old and very infirm, so much so that he cannot come to court, and his memory has almost certainly failed him.

But the said Joel Sartain is willing to testify and does hereby swear that in his first term of duty above stated, he served at least three months, his second term at least three months, his third term at least three months, his fourth term at least three months, for a total of 12 months. He is old and infirm, very poor and needy, and able to live even….. sworn the 21st to July 1836, signed Joel Sartain.

We, Cornelius Holly and David Ripley, residing in the same neighborhood with said Joel Sartain, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with said Joel Sartain and that we believe him to be 74 years of age. There is no minister of the Gospel in the neighborhood of the said Joel Sartain, except himself, signed Cornelius Holly and David Ripley
