If you have researched any Civil War Veteran who served in Lawrence County, Ohio, you may run into the problem of understanding the different regiments. When Lincoln called for volunteers for the Civil War, Lawrence County, Ohio’s quota quickly filled up, and they couldn’t accept any more soldiers.
That’s when the residents of our county crossed the Ohio River and joined forces with [West] Virginia and Kentucky. As the war progressed and many lives were either lost or injured, the 5th Virginia and the 9th Virginia Infantry consolidated. This explains why you may have one veteran serving in different regiments.
