Jesse W. Ball

Jesse W. Ball is Still Living
Ironton Register, July 30, 1896

Some time ago, we published a letter from Burlington stating that Orville L. Owen had received a letter from Jesse W. Ball, who was thought to be dead, as nothing was heard of him, since the Civil War.  Mr. Ball’s sister replied insisting that her brother was dead for they received a letter from his captain saying he was very sick, and afterward, they saw his name printed among the dead.

In reply to her note, Mr. Owens writes as follows: Burlington, Ohio, July 27

Editor Register – Last week I saw in your paper, a note from Emily Ball, saying her brother, Jesse W. Ball was dead and had been wounded at the Battle of Shiloh.  I was a member of the same Company and know he was not, but was taken sick, a few days after, and left on the field, and that was the last I ever heard of him until I received the letter which I will enclose, that you may see, and hope you will correct the impression that has gone out by her statement that it was a mistake about my getting any letter from him.  I do not know who sent that letter from Burlington, Ohio to you but it was all facts.

My friend and comrade. – I take this opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am living yet.  I would be glad to see you once more and to see old Burlington, Ohio.  I suppose there has been some change since 1861- 35 years ago.  I hope this will find you well.  Now Orville L. Owen, please write soon and tell me where Emily Ball is and whether she is married or not, and whether Mother is yet living or not.  Please excuse me and my bad scribbling as I am very nervous.

From your humble friend, Jesse W. Ball
