May and December

John Morgan’s Brother Want the Money He Left to His Pretty Young Wife Special Telegram to the Sunday  Register – Huntington, WV, May 20 – John Morgan, a Wetzel County, [WV] man, instituted a suit this evening in the Circuit Court against Chole Morgan and a number of others.

The plaintiff was formerly a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates.  The defendant is a beautiful woman and the daughter of the Gardners, a splendid people who lived in Green Bottom, Ohio. [sic]

Her beautiful face and figure attracted the eye of a rich old widower named Morgan.

He owned hundreds of acres of land. The courtship was short. He and the beauty went away and were married. He was 82, and she was 18.

They moved to a fine farm in this county. They got along well till the old man got sick a short time ago and died. He left a will giving his immense estate to his young wife, who had been a faithful nurse to him during his illness.

His brothers allege now that he was not in a condition mentally to properly convey his estate, and they will attempt to prove that he was influenced to turn it over to his wife.

She Surely Knowns the Facts

Green Bottom, WV, May 23 – To the Editor of the Sunday Register: Sir: – I desire through your columns to rectify a statement which appeared in your issue of the 21st regarding the suit brought in the Circuit Court of Cabell County, [WV] against Chole Morgan and a number of others. Aaron Morgan instituted the suit instead of John Morgan, as your statement is.

The courtship was not a “short” one. We were acquaintances for fifteen years. “Captain Morgan” was a constant visitor at my father’s home for two years before our marriage. “He and the beauty went away and were married.”

This is wrong.  We were married at my father’s residence at Quaker Bottom, Lawrence County, Ohio, in the presence of a number of relatives and friends.

“He was 82, and she was 18.” Captain Morgan was 74, and I was 29. Captain Morgan was an old bachelor instead of a “rich old widower.”

(Mrs.) C.E. Morgan
