Wayne Pump Company, Ironton, Ohio. Erected 1903.

The fine office building of the Wayne Pump Company, Sixth and Ashtabula streets erected in 1903 for the Ironton Engine Company brings back memories.

The engine plant was organized by H. A. Marting, A. H. Mittendorf, W. A. Murdock, Frank C. Tomlinson, Thomas L. Collett, W. P. Lewis, C. V. Pollock, A. R. Johnson and others in 1903. The allfree Engine company of Chicago held the patents for the steam engines.

For two-score years the plant was the finest machine shop in the Tri-State. Engines were built for the Ironton Furnace (1907) the Belfont Nail Mill, Crystal Ice Company, Ebert Brewery, the City Water Works and others.

Much of the huge machinery for the Buckeye Ordinance Works at South Point was made there in 1942 before the plant was sold to the Wayne Pump Company following the war. F. R. Henderson, 1402 South Sixth Street, came to Ironton from Cleveland in 1905 as assistant superintendent.

Henry Horn, 607 Lawrence Street worked at the machine shop 45 years. Among other skilled workers were Walter Bierly and son Paul, Henry Classing, Henry Lange, Curtis Bates, Sr.

Prominent office force members were E. B. Hetzel, E. H. Allfree, Jr., Wilbur Feil, 215 Rose Street, Miss Eunice Jones, 414 Etna Street.

Others recalled in the machine shops were A. R. Williams, Superintendent W. R. Youmans, Forrest E. Trees, Eddie Langsinger, W. W. Hall and others.

Patents for the Ironton Engine were sold and the name is used now by a firm at Flemington, N. J.
