Notes for Catherine Brubaker:

After her husband passed away, Catherine continued to live with her son Samuel Kouns. She is listed as a part of the family in the 1870 Lawrence Co., Ohio census: Samuel Kouns, age 46 B. Oh, Salome, age 48 B. Oh, Alex, age 16 B. Oh, Harriet, age 11 B. Oh, Benjamin, age 02 B. Oh, Catherine, age 70 B. Oh, infirm (nee Brubaker)

Portions of this information are recorded in “History of Lawrence County Ohio 1990,” purchased through Lawrence Co., Gen. Soc.

Notes for Samuel Kouns: Sharon: I was reviewing material on your “Sister” website for Samuel & Catherine Brubaker Kouns, their descendants, dates, etc. I have in my possession the right half of a family record page which had been removed from a family bible.

It was in the Elmer Brubaker family bible, which my husband Dan Brubaker was given by his father. (Elmer was Dan’s grandfather.) It appears to be from a Samuel Kouns or David Chatfield Bible. The names and dates of birth are missing from the left half of the page. However, the dates match up with the Samuel Kouns family information. The exciting piece of information is the marriage date for Samuel and Catherine Brubaker Kouns, which is given as 6 Oct 1814, married by Rev. Gathra. Doreen Brubaker

Samuel Kouns was born in Greenbrier County, Virginia, on January 8, 1795, and died on September 25, 1843. Samuel was a soldier in the war of 1812 under General Harrison. He was the son of Christian and Anna (Lamp) Kouns. Samuel married Catherine Brubaker in 1814. In 1818 he was recorded as a taxpayer in Lawrence Co., Ohio.

In 1820 Samuel was listed in the Fayette Twp Lawrence Co.., Ohio census with a wife and two children. Elizabeth was born ca. 1816 and married David Chatfield and Samuel B. Kouns, who married Salome McClure. Sometime after 1820, Samuel and Catherine adopted Nancy Lee Sherman, who eventually went on to marry George Bryson.

Samuel Kouns has served as a Justice of the Peace for one term and as school director for six terms. He also held the office of Treasurer of the Delta School District for nine years. Besides several other offices. Mr. Kouns was engaged in farming in Perry Twp., Lawrence Co., Ohio. {Taken from History of Lawrence County Ohio 1990 and 1882 Hardesty Atlas}

Samuel Kouns and Catherine Brubaker had the following children:

i. NANCY LEE SHERMAN. She married George Bryson on May 11, 1851, in Lawrence County, OH.

Note from Sharon: It is believed she was either adopted by Catherine and Samuel or was raised by them. Information was sent to me years ago, but no further record is known.

Notes for Nancy Lee Sherman: Not proven to be same: I.R. Feb. 6, 1873 – State v James Collins, Geo. Burton, William Neal, Buck Rowe, David Webb, and Nancy Sherman. No indictments.

ii. ELIZABETH REED KOUNS was born on 26 Aug 1815. She died on 20 Feb 1892. She married David Bowen Chatfield, son of David Chatfield and Susannah Belknap, on 21 Jul 1836. He was born on 22 Aug 1814 in Ontario County., N. Y. He died on 24 Sep 1891.
