Catherine Crawford was the daughter of James Crawford and Nancy (Kouns) Crawford. James was the son of James and Nancy (Reed) Crawford, who came from Pennsylvania to Burlington, Ohio, in 1820, settling on Charley Creek about ¾ mile from the river. The family’s main occupation was cutting wood which they sold to steamboats landing at Burlington, then the county seat.
Catherine’s great-grandfather, also named James Crawford, immigrated to Pennsylvania from Ireland in 1779. Nancy Kouns was the daughter of George and Catherine (Wolfenberger) Kouns, who arrived in Burlington in 1807 from their home in Virginia. The Honshells were married on October 8, 1850, with the Rev. W. T. Hand officiating, and their new home was in Catlettsburg.
In 1862, their daughter Nannie (Honshell) joined her parents on a tour of New York and the St. James River. In 1875, Wash Honshell bought a house in Cincinnati with plans to live there; however, the Honshells kept their beautiful home on the river at Catlettsburg and apparently resided in both places.

MRS. HONSHELL’S DEATH.
Friday afternoon, Mrs. Honshell, widow of the late Commodore Honshell and mother of Mrs. Lindsey Kelly of this city, died at her home in Catlettsburg, Ky., after a long illness. She had been very low for some time, and the end was expected at any moment. The deceased was almost 70 years old and was a native of this [Lawrence] county, [Ohio]. She was a woman of great intelligence and strong, noble character. Her death is universally deplored.
She had a wide acquaintance in this city, which she often visited. Her home at Catlettsburg was long known as the center of social influence and benevolent deeds.
