ALIENATION SUIT ON
Lawrence County Man Asks $10,000 for Loss of Wife’s Affections.
The damage suit of James L. Means against English H. Hixon, in which the plaintiff asks $10,000 for the alleged alienation of his wife’s affections, occupied most of the time in division No. 2 of the circuit court yesterday.
The case was brought to the Jasper County, Missouri courts from Lawrence County, Ohio, on a change of venue. Both parties in the case live near Miller, Mo.
According to testimony introduced in the case yesterday, the plaintiff and his wife had lived together several years when they had trouble and separated, the husband securing a divorce. Hixon had been boarding at the Means home, but when the trouble between Means and his wife arose he moved to the home of a neighbor.
It is said that in securing a divorce Means did not mention Hixon in the case and apparently did not have him in mind. Nine days after Means secured his divorce, however, Hixon married his divorced wife, which finally resulted in the filing of the damage petition charging Hixon with alienating the affections of Means’ wife. A large number of witnesses were summoned from Lawrence county, Ohio, to testify in the case.
The testimony was all concluded yesterday and the case will be argued this morning following the instructions by the court, after which it will be placed in the hands of the jury for settlement. Joplin Globe.
Later: The trial closed at 2 o’clock Saturday, the jury bringing in a unanimous verdict of $5,000.
