(typed as written) This Indenture made this 24 July 1929, between George Koons, John Bryan, overseers of the poor for Fayette Township in the county of Lawrence, State of Ohio, first part and William Miller of the same place of the other part –
Witnesseth, that these said overseers by virtue of the power of them given by the statute of Ohio with the appropriation and consent of Thomas Kerr, a Justice of the Peace for said Township, testified by his signing and sealing these presents, have placed and bound and by these present, do place and bind out as an apprentice and poor child named James Pigman, (who has no parent or guardian) who’s age is unknown that according to the best information is reckoned to be 12 years – and to the said William Miller, to learn the art or trade or mastery of farming and husbandry -the said James Pigman, after the manner of said apprentice to dwell with and serve the said William Miller from the day of the date hereof until the 24th day of July 1838 when (as is supposed) the said James will be 21 years old, if he should be living, during all which time the said James – his master will he faithfully shall serve and his secrets kept, his lawful commands obey, he shall do no damage to his said master, his goods, or otherwise nor willingly suffer any to be done. But in all things as a good and faithful servant, an apprentice shall behave and demeanor himself and shall not depart his service during the term aforesaid – and the said William Miller on his part agrees to teach the said apprentice the trade aforesaid, also to read and write and cipher as far as to include the single rule of three, that he will furnish him meat, drink, lodging, and clothing, neat and convenient for such an apprentice. And at the expiration of the term, furnished him, said apprentice, with a new Bible and two suits of common and one of Sunday wearing apparel and one horse, saddle, and bridle to be worth fifty dollars.

NOTE: In Capt Ellis D. Mace’s RIVER STEAMBOATS AND STEAMBOAT MEN, a number of steamboat men from Burlington are mentioned, among them a Boy Pigman. The “Boy” could be a nickname. There is no mention of what boats he served on.

James Pigman, an engineer of a riverboat, born Va or N C June 6, 1817, died Sybene, Lawrence Co, Ohio Nov 6, 1887. Mar Aug 2, 1840, at Burlington, Lawrence Co, Ohio to Eliza Dunfield b Va Sept 3, 1822, died Sybene, Dec 3, 1887, both buried Burlington Cem.
