Morning Irontonian, 8 June 1924, Sunday
Today the congregation and pastor of St. Mary’s church at Pine Grove will celebrate the establishment’s diamond jubilee, founded in 1849 by Rev. Father Emil Thienton. The celebration will be marked with appropriate exercises and services, sermons, and cheer, and all are invited to attend.
…..The first Mass was said at Pine Grove in 1849 by Rev. Thienton in a log building that then served as a church, standing about a quarter of a mile from the present edifice. In 1851, the first brick church was completed, another being constructed several years later.
The latter was burned down in 1915, and in 1917 Rev. F. X. Clark had built the present church, said to be as beautiful as any located in country sections.
Among the best-remembered pastors of Pine Grove, St. Mary’s church, are Rev. Father John Bauch, Rev. M. A. Smith, Rev. James McCann, Rev. Clark, and the present pastor, Rev. Father Otto F. Guenther.
